I just got a new X1600 and when i install it..it goes fine at first. but when i restart my computer the screen flickers and then sometimes goes out of frequency range, sometimes it just freezes and then sometimes it just restarts my computer completly. but all ending up restartimg my computer. but thats not all....when my computer turns back on its in 4bit color and the resolution is at 640x480.... I think that the drivers are causing this problem.
My computer specs:
-Asus motherboard
-AMD Athlon XP 3000+
-VIA chipsets
-AGP HIS Radeon X1600PRO 256MB.

If you could help that would be great!

Uninstall your Radeon drivers. If the nVidia drivers are still listed, uninstall them too. Then use DriverCleaner Pro and clean out both Radeon and nVidia drivers. Now reinstall the Radeon drivers.

Sounds to me like a driver conflict - either the nVidia drivers weren't uninstalled first, or they were but in typical fashion of video card drivers some files lingered and are causing conflicts.

For all ATI and nVidia video driver listings? If so, update/reinstall your chipset drivers (make sure the board's AGP driver is installed), then install the Catalyst drivers.

how do i reinstall/install the chipset and agp drivers? my computer is an old retail compaq. it is a compaq presario sr1030nx.

edit : i found this site. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft...s&lang=en&product=405451&dlc=en&os=228
could you tell me if what i need is here?

edit #2 : could the problem be that maybe because my motherboard is soo old i need to set the AGP slot to 4X instead of 8X? if so could you tell me how i could do that.
PS my Bios are locked so i cant do much in there.

The AGP speed shouldn't make a difference. The Spring 2004 Original Chipset Driver Collection should be a good start. While you're at it, use Belarc Advisor or Everest to determine exactly what chipset is in that system - if reinstalling the originals doesn't work we may have to get them (either bundled or piecemeal) from Via's website.

that website says i have
Chipset
Via KM400A

+ the specs for my motherboard say AGP 8x/4x (1.5V) but the box for the ATI card says 8X(0.8V), 4X(1.5V). is that the problem?

Anything with a red or yellow icon, something from around the time you see the problem happening. Make it happen again if need be.

Wow, you got problems all right. At this point I'd say reinstall, possibly reformat prior. But one other thing you might check:

Does this board have integrated or onboard video? If so, go to Display Properties, Settings, and click on whichever monitor icon (1 or 2) says it's on the built-in video. Right-click on it and uncheck Attached. If it's greyed out just go ahead with that Windows CD of yours.

Erm...before we get excited and say he should reformat (which may simply cause the problem to come back, if he's using the same bad drivers), I suggest that we ask the OP to post a sample of the errors he's getting. :)

Are there any error codes or parameters? They can be eight characters, or eight character preceded by (usually) 0x. If you can post the four or five that accompany each of those, dclive may be able to help narrow down the problem.
