hired a new guy at my job, missed 2 weeks already

we hired a guy here at work about a month ago. so 2 weeks into his shift(which starts on a sunday) he doesnt show up. monday no show. tuesday we file a missing person report for him and the cops show up to his house, he then calls us stating hes sick, his phone died and he didnt know any numbers since hes new. so he misses the whole week. he then comes in a full week. then this past sunday he showed up for about 3 hours then took off. we havent heard from him since. he took all his crap too(last time he didnt).

why would he be doing this? a co-worker told me it was to get unemployment. wouldnt we be able to fire this guy, thus him not elible for unemployment? or is not that simple? HR is handling but im curious as to why he would be doing this and what could possibly happen.

He's an idiot? or a stoner? or a slacker, or the work sucks, etc. Obviously he doesn't want the job.

Why would you file a missing persons report for a guy who doesn't show up for 2 days? 😕 You aren't his parents or his wife.

Yeah, that's messed up though. I've been at my new job for a 2 months now and haven't missed any work. Can I has a cookie now? 😛

to be fair, thats pretty impressive brass.

btw what kind of job is this? the dude sounds like a natural for warehouse or cubicle building positions...

can you even collect unemployment if you're fired for just cause?

It's up to the state to decide, but it's been my experience that most terminations-for-cause end up with UI being denied.

Yeah, this. WTF?

he was gone for 2 days and no call, cell wasnt working. no emergency contacts, all his crap was here. plus we thought it would be a good idea to send the police to his house(for fun).

hes a system engineer and i THINK hes hourly. we work for a pretty large company with "unlimited sickdays". actually i dont know if its unlimited, but the policy just states when you're sick just take time off.

I thought most places would for a full time employee. 2 days no call/contact would probably get my company to call the cops.... and fire me. 😛

That alone would get him fired at my work. He also wouldn't have worked long enough to qualify and his actions caused him to be fired.

Doesn't your company have a no call/no show policy?

um... if he took his stuff, are you guys really expecting him to come back? And since you have an unlimited sick day policy, does this mean he is still getting paid? What company do you work for? 🙂

Why is this even a question? No call/no show/no explanation should mean instant dismissal. A lot of places don't even bother with the "no explanation" part and will expect you to at least figure out SOME way to call in if there really is an emergency.

gawd, fire this fvcking guy already.

i can't believe people act that way. i mean ostensibly they are from the same species as me but it just seems so foreign to be a total useless sack of crap to act like that with an employer.

fire your hiring manager while you are at it.
any new job should have some probation period. in this case the guy would have failed his ;0

I don't think that would work to collect unemployment. Plus, the job record will make it more difficult to get employed elsewhere, unless you're working at a fast food place or something.

I've seen other unemployment scam attempts - we had a couple of people who had to submit applications in order to maintain their unemployment. One guy intentionally filled out the application with nothing but non-serious answers. "Position desired" "Doggystyle with a hot blonde" His "application" was thrown out.
Follow-up call: "Did <name> apply for a job?" "Nope. "

Unemployment looks at the PREVIOUS 5 quarters to determine benefits; not the current quarter.

Also, when terminated for cause, will cause a delay of up to a couple of months as a penalty.

Agreed.

How difficult is it to Google the company you work for and get a phone number and then call in and ask for your boss?
