Yeah, that's always bothered me too. Everytime I see Merc, I pronounce it Merk, and think Mercury.

I'm pretty sure in Britain where mercury doesn't exist Merc is acceptable slang for Mercedes. That's where it comes from. I'm pretty sure I've heard J. Clarkson say merk this or merk that.

Mercury? Not worth talking about.

Maybe, but chopping the top on a Mercedes and turning it into a hotrod just doesn't have the same effect.

They should chop the top on this...

This. Does Mercury even have any market share anymore? They are pretty insignificant

I don't think it matters when the TT-V12 is detuned from 1000 ft-lbs of torque to something more forgiving like 750 ft-lbs.

Yeah, the V12 is probably the source of all that weight. It's like adding a 4 cylinder engine to the weight of the V8 car. Also with the amount of horsepower it is putting out, I am thinking that motor probably has forged internals like the pistons, rods and and crank shaft. That adds weight too.

Not necessarily. For example, the Chevy 5.7 litre V8 weighs about the same as the I4 out of a Mazda Miata. I seriously doubt that the engine is the main contributing factor. Also, forged parts are, usually, both stronger and lighter. This is one reason why racers like forged wheels over cast designs.

They're just more expensive, which is why many OEMs don't include them. For a $200+k car, the shift lever better be forged, billet, or some other type of high strength bling.

Agreed, and modern Mercedes engines do seem to be rather light.

6.2L V8 from E63, S63, etc: 438 lbs
5.4L supercharged V8 from E55, S55, etc: 485 lbs
6.0L V8 LS2: 448 lbs
7.0L V8 LS7: 458 lbs
5.0L V10 S85 from BMW M5/M6: 529 lbs

The LSx series is relatively light, but let's not exaggerate here...

The miata 1.8L weighs about 290lbs alone and about 370lbs with the transmission attached and all accessories.

The LS1 weighs about 450lbs...

Impressive numbers on the Mercedes engines, they are close to the weight of the LSx engines and DOHC versus the LSx's OHV.

But anyways, the engine isn't the sole reason for the car's weight, the S chassis is very heavy without the engine, it is after all supposed to be based on Mercedes most comfortable, safest, and luxurious chassis.
