At work we've been talking about for weeks now about going out somewhere together and last week we all agreed to a hiking/fishing trip. Now we just need to come up with someplace to go where we can go fishing in the morning and hiking in the afternoon, preferably somewhere with scenic mountain vistas. We were asked to come up with possible places to go. I have a few ideas but it's not scenic. Anyone know of any good places around central Massachusetts?

you are better off going to NH. Central MA is kind of dead (and flat)....I am not saying there are no good spots for what you want to do, but they are few and far between.

Quabbin Reservoir for fishing and you're not too far from the Holyoke Range or Mt. Wachusett for hiking.

This. Good fishing in the Q about 50 years ago.
given the amount of snow this year; you do not have to worry about low water.

Mt. Greylock also for hiking

Wow than's guys! Looks like it will be Quabbin and we'll discuss which ranges/mountains you guys mentioned for hiking. And Hayabusa Rider, central MA because the company is in Worcester.

You might consider the Franconia Ridge State park in NH. It's not all that far compared to the Berkshires, and it's fabulous. Perhaps the best bang for the buck hikes are found along the Franconia Ridge. Something to consider, and if you are ever interested in details PM me. I lived in NH and VT for many years. If you've not been there you owe it to yourself.

If you're going to stop by the Quabbin, make sure you take ~15 minutes to visit the base where the fish hatchery is. It's off route 9 as well.

I live out in western MA. If you can make it all the way out, Mt. Greylock is the best hike in MA. Mt. Monadnock in NH is only an hour north of Worcester. It gets crowded, but I recommend either the Halfway House or Spellman trails for fewer crowds and more interesting hiking. As mentioned above, if you're willing to make the drive, the White Mountains in NH are well worth the trip. Make sure to climb something above tree line.

If you come out to the pioneer valley, Bare mountain, Mt. Holyoke, and Mt. Tom are the best hikes with views. If visibility is really low, I recommend Mt. Norwottuck, as the horse caves are really cool (and were a hideout during Shay's Rebellion).

You've got the AT to the west of you.... and Blue Hills/Boston Harbor to the east!

Just make sure you understand the stupidity that is the pronunciation of MA city names. Worcester is WOO-STAH to them..... they are some strange people.
