IMHO...that guy is one TOUGH SOB!!!

Kudos to him for surviving, and having the guts to do what it took to make it out alive..

I would've used the pocket knife and start chiseling my arm free 😛

i dont know exactly how his arm was pinned.. but I would've used the pocket knife and started chiseling the rock away.
Do you have any idea how long it would take to chisel away a 1000lb rock?

He cut off his arm with a pocket knife?? Now i'm not gonna go make any attempts, but one would be able to cut through everything with a pocket knife? Bones..?

No bones @ the elbow 😉

Nothing but ligaments and tendons.

I'm guessing his arm was probably crushed and would've been amputated anyway. But just the grisly thought of cutting through your own skin, flesh and muscle :Q THEN he rapels his way back to safety - with half an arm, amazing! If the tip of my little finger got lopped off, I think I would cry for 3 days straight 😛

rock rolls pins his arm inbetween another rock like so... ! = arm
anyways, if it was kinda like this i would just chip out around the arm to get some room

damn hiker, he would have been better off staying home playing computers and being a nerd like me 🙂
Its not safe out there, too dangerous even for a whimp like me.

hiker going hiking again, I can imagine another boulder falling on his leg, here it goes again. another heroic act? is it $$$, is it fame?

Find the actual interview transcript. He was trapped for 4 days, tried to push the rock off, tried to chisel his arm free and realized that he would be dead soon and in that remote of an area they may never have found his body. He decided he had to cut the arm off or die. He put a tourniquet on the arm, broke the two bones (in his forearm) and cut the flesh and freed himself. The break and cuts were judging from the interview 2-4" below his elbow.

Not only did the guy cut his arm off with a dull pocketknife he broke his own arm. I would have died on that rock because I know I couldn't have done what he did.
