Highway Accident - Why do some think its ok to drive in the shoulder?

So i get on the I-75 this afternoon headed home and less than 3 minutes in, traffic comes to a complete stop. About 20 minutes later, after countless police, fire trucks and ambulances go by on the right shoulder, a Bayflight helicopter lands in the roadway to take out the injured.

So about 20-30 minutes more go by, and I notice that some people are flying down the same shoulder of the road to try and make it to the next exit, which mind you is about 3-4 miles up the road. Some of them try and fly into a space whenever they see one open, but others just blissfully drive down the shoulder of the road or even further into the grass when trying to avoid someone who tried to wedge into a small space but couldn't make it. Cops were still coming by on the same shoulder every so often.

So another 20-30 minutes go by and the road starts to open a bit, only the left lane. As I slowly make my way up there, what do I see on the right? About 30 cars, all pulled over by a bunch of cops next to the accident, giving them ALL tickets. Since the accident was off the right shoulder, the cops put up cones, not only in the right lanes, but also all the way across the right shoulder and grass, it basically just corralled them all together.

Not to mention about 30 feet in front of where they were stopped, there were two sheets on the ground covering what looked like two bodies. Sure enough, I come home and read this;

🙁

probably south americans. everyone drives like that down there. and you've got lots of them in floriduh.

edit: damn you newbian!

Dunno, a short trip when the exit is in sight I can understand, but in a long traffic jam, just block off shoulder and move back in lane for cops

Owned. I love it.

Sucks for the people who died though. 🙁

same reason they pass everyone and wait to the last second to merge
or drive on the wrong side of the road temporarily to reach a left turn lane

think they are special/above the law/their rush more important that yours

generally just selfish and discourteous. stupid too. i would MUCH MUCH rather have cops ticketing violators of these kind of behaviors instead of trying to trap speeders really moving at the speed of traffic or a generally safe speed (independent of actual posted limit)

My stepdad got a ticket for that once...cop said he was passing traffic on the shoulder or something. Sometimes you can't win..

Actually every computer model of traffic flow shows that fully utilizing the lane that's ending, followed by an orderly merge, keeps traffic moving the smoothest.

I have pointed out the flaw in your reasoning. The bolded is not possible on this planet.

Technically it doesn't really suck for them anymore, just their families 🙁

But yeah wtf, if you're a quarter of a mile from the exit and traffic is really backed up then I can see getting in the shoulder, but 3-4 miles is nuts. Serves them right.

We did once because our car overheated in traffic. While trying to push the car to the shoulder, my foot got FUCKED up and mangled. Anyways, we got back in and drove on the shoulder to the exit with people honking and swearing at us the whole time.

Haha great to see they got tickets. this is actually a fairly serious offence. They are pretty much blocking emergency vehicles by doing that. Emergency vehicles should be able to drive fairly quick on the shoulder without needing to worry about cars in the way.

We had a bad one outside DC this morning. Ticked me off because I dont even use I-66 to get to my college, but I had to wait while work commuters slowly moved up so I could get by.

I hate when people do that.

This weekend there was a horrible traffic jam going to the George Washington Bridge. People were flying down the side. I look in my mirror and I see a cop flying down the lane as well with his lights on. There were about 15 cars stuck there and all he does is tell them to get out of the breakdown lane. No tickets or anything. :| They all scattered like roaches. I didn't let the guy in front of me cut into my lane though.

Whenever this happens pull your car into the right shoulder but still keep your spot in the line of traffic in the right lane. This will block them off. Other drivers will support your efforts to hold your place as will truck drivers. Shut them down.

Do keep an eye on your rearview though incase an emergency vehicle comes.

😕 Plenty of people do it MA and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of them aren't south americans.

It's also legal on parts of I-95 in Massachusetts.

I know that but it definitely doesn't stop them when it's illegal too.
