Hightpoint RAID and SuSe 8.1

I'm getting ready to install on my new system. Both of my harddrives reside on the RAID controller (albeit in JBOD mode), so I'm going to have to have access to the controller during install.

According to the SuSe website, 8.0 has full support for the 370/372 controller. Highpoint has a driver download for 8.0 which has some confusing instructions involving boot disks. Neither source seems to say anything about 8.1 (although I can make some presumptions).

Could someone assist me in sorting out exactly what I need to do, if anything, during the install?

Download the bootdisks and find out. Chances are you will find out early in the install process if youc an access the disk or not. Im not trying to be a dick, just the best answer I have right now

I'd suggest using software raid instead of that card (or the promise cards) cause its faster and supports more options. If you have a jumper to convert that guy to standard ATA i would.

Since, as I mentioned in my original post, I'm not running a RAID, that won't be a problem. I'm more concerned about being able to access my drives.

uhm, ok..... so you have no jumper to convert it to normal IDE? and you are not running raid but you are attaching your drives to the RAID controller to run raid and want to access your non raid drives through a raid only controller?

change the IDE ports to get info off you need, if you dont need anything on them then run as normal IDE if the controller allows, or hook it up to the onboard IDE, or buy another controller... high point and promise controllers are both a PITA, but can be done if you really want it, but I've wasted many hours with them and will tell you from experience its not worth the effort..........

Abzstrak, did you read my original post? I already have the disks setup in JBOD mode; I just want to know how to install SuSe on them.

What part of the boot disk instructions from Highpoint didn't make sense? Give us something to work with...

I've never used a fake RAID controller, but since you're using it just as an ATA controller, you should follow n0cmonkey's suggestion of trying the installer out. Get back to us if that doesn't work, and we can look into the Highpoint modules route.

The problem with low-end RAID controllers with respect to Linux is that the manufacturers supply a binary-only module for Linux, usually older versions, with scant documentation.

All you need to attempt the FTP install is the 16 MB bootable ISO.
