I'm looking for guidance here in an effort to not wipe my home file server's drives by mistake. The server is running Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition.
Currently, my boot drives (2x 80GB WD SATA drives) are set up as the boot drives in a RAID1 configuration using NVRAID (motherboard is an A8N-SLI Premium). My data drives (2x 500GB WD SATA) are set up in RAID1 using the SiL 3114 RAID controller that is on the motherboard. For a variety of reasons, I would like to migrate my hard drive setup from using the onboard RAID to using a discrete RAID card, so I purchased a Highpoint 2310 (4 port SATA, PCI-Express x4).
What is the best strategy to use to migrate my current setup over to the highpoint controller, and do it without wiping the drives or requiring a hard drive reinstall? I have already installed the HPT controller and drivers, so that part is taken care of. I did look over the card's manual, but there was very little mention on how to accomplish this, other than the card will treat these drives as a "legacy array"
What is happening is the machine booted up fine off the 2310, with one of the 80GB drives showing as "L" (legacy) in the array manager, and the other showing in disk administrator with partitions, but no drive letters. When I try to create an array, it tells me that I need to initialize the drives, which will apparently destroy data, before I can add them to an array, so there's no way to create an array. Is there no way to convert a legacy array into a regular array that this controller can use?
Thanks,
Pete
