and when i hold my mouse over them one sales something about haggle free cars and another about an ibm pc sale...okaaay wtf is goin on.

like the word computer and the word sedan are highlighted and then when i go into threads people's signatures have them too.

I know it does that here at AT if you search for a specific keyword.. and then it highlights the keyword.. try it... right no top.. type something in the past.. and it will search it and high light it yellow.
 
There are a number of spyware programs that do this. Foremost in the media's spotlight is the Smart Tags functionality of the upcoming IE 6.0, which will do this. Other programs that do this include Flyswat. Maybe some other program you installed also automatically installed Flyswat?
