What do you guys think about acer? They have very strong price-performance but personally i have some bad experience with their power supply.

Too many antisony people here for that.

Well they certainly haven't got the highest build quality, so why include them? You might as well include all the other manuf:Qacturers as well then.

I've had very good experiences with IBM Thinkpads, and my parents are both extremely happy with their Lenovo Thinkpads. Apparently, build quality hasn't gone down at all after the switch.

If you aren't looking for pure power, however, I'd really recommend an Apple laptop. I've played around with a MacBook Pro and it is a very solid machine (both hardware-wise and software-wise). I haven't had a chance to try out a MacBook, but judging from past iBook experience, they too are very nice little machines. Just my $0.02.

No one has suggested it, but I'll dissuade them just in case. HP/Compaq isn't a great buy. I've got a Compaq Evo n800w, and it runs super hot, and after 3 years, has gone through 3 motherboards. I know some people with the same model who have had much worse luck, though, and they've gone through no less than a dozen hard drives.

Itronix GoBook III > ToughBook :) Want to operate your lappie underwater? That's one of the tests that one of Itronix's customers did (military, IIRC). "here little Suzie, play the fun Barney-The-Dinosaur game with this computer. In the wading pool. "
