Highest Processor using SDRAM

I'm thinking of upgrading my ageing system.. the CUSL2C-PIII1GHz..

I'd like to keep my RAM as it was very expensive and look at possibilities of just getting a new mobo+CPU combo and that's all.. use everything else.. my AGP card, my sound card, my powersupply, drives.. everything..

so what's the fastest mobo/processor I can go on SDRAM alone? don't care AMD or Intel..

about a P4 1.7 or so Ghz...I wouldn't dump any more money into that dead system however.

Actually, I really think that the newer DDR and DDR2, etc DIMMs are still "SDRAM"; so I am going to have to guess you are now discussing the 168-pin PC-100/ PC-133 DIMMs? Those were last supported with AMD XP CPUs (not able to answer about Intel) of roughly the XP 2000+ vintage. Those are long out of production, and would almost certainly require using a used CPU. Perhaps a new Sempron for that same older generation s462 might still be available somewhere at a steeply inflated price, but the MB would probably still not be able to treat it as any faster than the XP 2000 was running at (about 1.6 to 1.7 GHz).

As old as that P3 of yours is, you won't find much in the way of ISA slots supported, if your audio isn't PCI.

There were some two-way system boards from Biostar and ECS that had two slots each for 168-pin and 184-pin DIMMs. It's possible you could still find one of those in almost new condition. The ones I recall were Socket A, for AMD (s462), but if there were dual-RAM MBs for AMD, most likely there were for Intel as well.

At this point I think you might as well get the A64 3400+ with free mobo for $99 at newegg. For DDR if you look hard you can find used 512MB PC2700 for about $30 (bought a stick myself in FS/FT recently). In fact you can still sell your P3 rig for decent amounts. Your upgrade will be very cheap and will beat any rig with SDRAM by a large margin.

hmm thanks!! that's a lot of useful information..

looks like SDRAM is really outdated.. and i was just caught at the end of the curve.. there is definitely no point in upgrading to a 1.4 or an XP .. i' just continue using this box.. it's a good Home theater PC .. and I now have my new rig for gaming and photoshop etc.
