Don't get me started on high phone bills!! We use Qwest, and are getting reamed! First of all, we have (had, I just changed some things) a home phone with the deluxe feature package for $40, my cell for $40 (1000 anytime minutes), and my wife's cell for $50 (2000 minutes). After taxes, our normal phone bill was over $140. However, she likes to use the cell phone. A lot. Her friends and family all live across the country. So she would go over her minutes. I would go over sometimes too, as my family lives away too. And we travel occasionally (not enough to warrant changing cell phone plans to include roaming, so I thought), and we pay roaming fees when we're out of town.
We got married in PA in December, and I had a single 123-minute phone call to my mom, at 65¢/minute roaming, that cost $79.95! My bill this month is $357. In fact, I just looked at our previous bills for the last 10 months, and we've paid $2093. That's an average of $209/month. So I cancelled my cell phone (she "needs" hers for work), and cancelled all features on the home phone except for caller-ID. I just feel that companies are doing everything possible to gouge us for all they can, so when I can do something about it, I'm going to. I'm not going to allow the phone company to take $200/month from me. Phone service just isn't that important to me. I'm ready to start keeping my money from now on, instead of giving it to companies. (This doesn't apply to computer purchases, as everyone should go buy a new P4 system, so my stock goes up.)
