Highest Minimum-Wage State Washington Beats U.S. Job Growth

When Washington residents voted in 1998 to raise the state’s minimum wage and link it to the cost of living, opponents warned the measure would be a job-killer. The prediction hasn’t been borne out.

In the 15 years that followed, the state’s minimum wage climbed to $9.32 -- the highest in the country. Meanwhile job growth continued at an average 0.8 percent annual pace, 0.3 percentage point above the national rate. Payrolls at Washington’s restaurants and bars, portrayed as particularly vulnerable to higher wage costs, expanded by 21 percent. Poverty has trailed the U.S. level for at least seven years.

The debate is replaying on a national scale as Democrats led by President Barack Obama push for an increase in the $7.25-an-hour federal minimum, while opponents argue a raise would hurt those it’s intended to help by axing jobs for the lowest-skilled.

The federal minimum-wage legislation is opposed by business groups such as the National Retail Federation, along with many Republicans, including House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.

Maybe once the idiots over in Seattle raise the minimum wage to $15...and it's looking like it will pass...and many businesses say they'll lay off workers and/or move out of the city.

The governor is even looking seriously at raising the state minimum wage by a significant amount...

Minimum wage redistributes without enriching corrupt politicians. Whether it is wise is another matter, it's still quite favorable.

Unfortunately, what it really does is force businesses to raise prices to cover the increased labor costs...or lay off workers to reduce the labor costs...which isn't always a viable option.

It's just that they have a good work ethic if their wages were lower they'd work even harder or they'd somehow pay for college and get a better job... don'cha know.

Did... did you even read the story and the history? Everything you just said is what was said 15years ago yet its been the opposite.

Well it's simple math. Someone had to cover the costs.

Reading comprehension fail and ignorance. In the face of facts you say the same thing without actually thinking about what your saying.

Here is some data. If your too busy to read it fine then say that don't repeat ignorance and think anyone is gonna take you seriously.

I am a small business man and we choose to pay even our warehouse guys make twice the minimum wage because we don't want apathy and carelessness.

Low minimum wages where the person can't afford to take care of their family or even themselves end up on the dole in another ways.

Give it to them in wages and they will lift themselves up by their bootstraps.

The meme of only high school kids having those jobs isn't true anymore either.

Your corporate overlords have trained you well. Keep spouting stupidity. No thought necessary!

Neuroscience has shown that the conservative brain is susceptible to altered reality, bubble world programming owing to a fear of nonconformity and loss of face. The colloquial term for it is the conservative trait of circling the wagons. You will see denial and counterattack. The Indians are at fault for attacking us for settling on their land. They deny all cause and effect. It looks externally as if they were brain dead or stupid, rather than the aggressive vicious destroyers of 'the other' that they really are. They destroy by projecting their own evil out there and attacking it via rationalization and truthiness certainty that their own evil isn't within but out there.

This capacity to see the world as hideous and despicable, makes them into what they fear. They actually become, themselves, hideous and despicable.

You claim he is the troll yet you have added nothing of substance to this thread. What would that make you?

I called him out for trolling, then you bitched at me, how is what you did any better? 😕 You're simply the "bigot calling another a bigot for calling the first bigot a bigot?" Right?

I live in the Communist Police State of Illinois. They never met a tax they don't like. That is why all the companies are fleeing the state of Illinois.

In Washington State you have the big Monopoly of Microsoft. Bill Gatus of Borg will assimilate anyone.

You have to know how to critically examine the facts. A lot of well trained university grads work for Microsoft. Of course they pay more.

I'm always interested to see what merits being called 'communism' these days.

When you pay the collective workforce more, the more the employees will be able to afford your stuff, creating jobs and stimulating the economy.

We base our economy on 'futures', what we think will happen, which just has the effect of ratcheting up prices. With stagnant job growth and wages we've pleased the shareholders, but we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Few can afford to buy much at our own stores.

This is true with taxes too. When the government is sound, there's a surplus and people and companies are feeling confident our economy grows in leaps and bounds.
