Higher transfer rates in XP... why?

When i load a aprox. 500mb file in SF 50. (copying the file from a 60gxp to a ultrastar 18.3 LVD2 and creating a wave image) in w2k. it would take the machine 2-3 min. with all the right drivers installed and everything setup right... In XP the same situation takes around 30-40 sek. and the system boots faster, everything seems much faster... what did they do? and i havn't had a crash yet... even when i load the most demanding plugs wich usually crashes w2k... runs painlessly... xp is cool....
