Higher Resolutions on a Smaller Monitor

Hey,

I work for SLCentral.com, and I am working on a review on the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. I need to do lot's of benchmarks at 1600x1200 resolution, however, my monitors are two 15" LCD's (dual display, 15" x2), so therefore, the maximum resolution is 1024x768. Is there any way to test on my monitor at a 1600x1200 resolution?

Please let me know ASAP!

Thanks,
Daniel

aww, you can't give a fair review of a card with monitors like that! even if you did by chance have one that could run 1600x1200. either find a respecatbe tube, prefrably a 21" or even a higher end flatscreen or at least be forthcomeing in the review that you were limited by the monitor becuase there is realy no way to gadge image quality in a sitation like that. it realy isn't fair to reveiw a high end card in a situation like that though, its like judging a porche on its offroad abilities.

There's really no way I can spend so much money on just a monitor for one review. I also have a Philips 17" CRT flat (not LCD) that has a max. resolution of 1280x1024. What can I possibly do?

Nothing, sorry. I have a Phillips 107S 17". You'll need to get a good 19" that can do 1600x1200, but I'd reccommend a 21".

You can go here (in registry) to edit res: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Config > 0001 > Display > Settings

You can change resolution manually from there, but I would NOT AT ALL reccomend doing that. Not good to fool around with stuff you know the part you are trying to change can't handle.

I'm looking around for a cheap 19". Hopefully I can find something. BTW, I also have a 107S, would that work, and what's the maximum resolution on it (I don't use that monitor, so I don't know.
Does anyone have any reccomendations on very cheap monitors 19" +?

It is indeed 1280x1024.

here are some monitors that can do 1600x1200, hopefully some fall into your budget. GL.

And welcome to the forums!

The CRT can do 1600x1200 easily. CRT unlike LCDs are not resolution limited unless you combine that with a refresh rate. You can most definately add a 2048x1536 mode that the monitor will sync to its just a question of how painfully low a refresh that is in (and the fact it will look like crap even without considering the low refresh on a budget 17").

Try this:

1) get powerstrip and install it
2) From the powerstrip menu go to Display Profiles->Configure
3) Hit "Advanced timing options"
4) Hit "Custom Resolutions"
5) On the "Active Pixels" Line type 1600 in the left box, 1200 in the right
6) Set the horizontal refresh rate to 69 (max for that monitor is 70, but want to be sure it works before you tweak it a little higher). Leave all the other boxes in that section with their default values. Hit tab to get out of editing that box and vertical refresh will automatically adjust to 55 or so to go with that low horizontal.
7) hit Add new resolution Most likely since 1600x1200 is normal and just the refresh is non-standard it will accept the new res immediately without having to reboot. If so hit ok, otherwise hit continue and repeat the process with whatever other resolutions you want.

Note this will only work with your CRT, not with the LCD.

Great, I'll try that tomorrow when I have a chance to use that monitor. Are you sure that by doing those steps I can get the monitor to work effectively at 1600x1200, and play games?

And thanks for the welcoming to the boards! Hopefully I'll be here a while.

It will definately work at that res, but the 60Hz bug might keep it from playing games unless you also use refreshforce or similar tool to force it to stay down in the 55Hz mode rather than 60Hz for 1600x1200 (after you add the mode with powerstrip). IIRC there is an option for this built into the latest Radeon drivers.

keep vsync always off for benchmarking, the refresh rate will not be an issue.

also, a nice monitor is realy worth the investment if you use your computer a lot and for gameing even lcds are still generaly not a good way to go. for a 19" most anything in this list would do you good:

of course a 21"-22" is always cool but the price premium is prety high still. i recomend trinitron/diamondtron tubes but some people can't stand the sight of the stablizer bars in the screen. regardless, a monitor is something you should see in person before you buy, shoping online can be tricky, i just posted the above link for reference.

I'll have to live with what I have now. I'm going to use my 17" CRT instead of my 15" LCD, but I'll keep one 15" LCD for a dual-display. I'll just have to live with games at 1280x1024, which, in my opinion is plenty. Hopefully, I'll soon be able to afford a nice, big, monitor, but until then, my 17" will have to do.

ohh sure games at 1280 are wonderful on even a large monitor, and in some ways even beter on a small one. it is the issue with how lcds refresh their pixels that i am refering to when i say they are best left out of gameing. i just brought it up becuse it sounds like in your situation you could pawn off one of your lcds and the 17" to raise enough cash for a decnet 19" crt and have the best of both worlds with dual displays and a good high resolution/gameing display. just figured i should throw it out as an option, if you are keeping that 9700pro you might as well get the most out of it. 😉

Very true...I can't sell the Philips 17", but I do have another 17" by Envision, and I'm guessing I won't get much money out of that, considering I bought it for something around $75.

Actually, according to eBay, if I sold an 15", I'd get about $150, considering $200 is the price for my same monitor brand new on eBay.
