Higher gain wifi antenna, no better reception

Hi,

I have changed from a standard antenna to a 15" 9db version as my wifi signal is very weak.

However I get exactly the same signal quality from the better antenna. I do however see twice as many networks with the new antenna.

Any ideas why ?

Thanks.

I assume you are talking about an Antenna on the client side.

If the signal is very low and noisy the Antenna would not help.

In such a case you are much better off putting it on the Router/Access Point side.

Would I be right in thinking that a higher gain antenna will pick up more networks, but that those additional networks may be causing interferance with the one I wish to connect to.

And so a directional antenna with a lower gain may be more suitable.

And yes, its client side.

Thanks.
