I am in the process of buying a new compressor for my shop. I am pretty much sold on a quincy. I am looking at, at least their QP series, but after more research want to jump to their QR-25 series that is a full pressure lubricated unit with valves.

the price difference is about 35% (~1500 bucks) to move to the QR-25.

I am looking at a 10 hp, 3 phase 35 cfm unit.

Before I spend the dough, thought I would ask if anyone had any insight. I am figuring over 10 yrs the price difference isn't much.

I'm assuming you run a professional shop given that you're looking at a 3-phase. My dad ran a shop for years on an Ingersol-Rand and never had any trouble from it. Quincy makes a great compressor so you should be set. I'd get the QR but wouldn't have any worries with a QP. Sorry, that's probably not too helpful.

Is this for air tools or a paint gun or something else?

Not sure what your budget is but if you use it fairly continuously look into a rotary screw compressor. They are in a different league than piston types IMO.

I got really lucky and was able to purchase a used Kaeser unit for well under half the MSRP and it only had a couple hundred hours on it. Don't think I could justify paying full price though.

If you use it sporadically though a rotary screw also wouldn't be worth it. This was for a manufacturing operation that ran a good part of the day everyday.

a kaeser would be like 8 grand... and after talking with some people I think a piston style fits my needs better. the rotary style are more set to go 100% all day everyday. My needs are heavy use 3 days a week and intermittent the rest of the days.

I have a farm and my brother does some autobody work in our shop. We have a 22cfm c-aire machine now, but real world is about an 18-20 cfm. we have gone through the pump twice and it's on its second motor. the pump is starting to make noise again, so I don't think it has long. my brother had two DA's going for about 4 days and I think that ate it up.

my neighbor swears by hydrovane rotary. I can get one of those cheaper than the QR quincy. the maintenance is a little more involved from what the dealer tells me, but salesman advises it only needs to be done every 2000 hrs vs every 500 on the piston quincy. He also advises the rotaries are less efficient, which isn't a huge concern for me. I know almost all high demand shops are moving to screws/rotaries, but after talking to the salesman, I think the piston fits our needs better.

Hydrovane model V07PURHS-8 is what I would be looking at in comparison

I did a little more reading about these. The QR is going to not be so loud as the pump runs at a slower speed. It's pressure lubed and from what I understand has a spin-on oil filter and is easier to maintain. It's a heavy beast but is definitely the better choice. It sounds like it's going to get some heavy use so it may be worth the extra green.

I would get the QR just to minimize the floor space it takes up. They seem quite comparable in overall performance otherwise.

FWIW I have a 'standard duty' Quincy compressor that has been around for nearly 20 years doing home garage/shop work. I think that Quincy makes really good stuff.

the QP is also pressure lubed, but it is basically a QT (splash lube) that they put an oil pump on. It still uses the reed valves

I will be spending $200 on filters, $1500 on a cycling air dryer, building a room in building and paying for wiring, so I am trying to save some money. But then again, what's 1500 bucks to get the better model....

this is pretty big money @ ~5500 just for the compressor. having a hard time pulling the trigger on it.
