High temps

I have a 3500+ venice with e3 stepping. I got a fry's deal with a mobo for 239. I have an ECS kv2 lite with a k8t800pro chipset.

Idle temps in bios are 45C. In windows, the only program that will monitor the temps correctly is the omniguard(came with mobo). under load while running benchmarks the max temp it goes to is 50C.

I reseated my zalman 7000balcu with as5 because i had not seated it correctly. used the small little BB sized method both times and still have the exact same temps.

also i upgraded the bios to the latest version.

I also touched the hsf while it was running under load and it's really cool to the touch. not hot at all. Is it possible that the mobo is reading the temps too high? I OC'd to 2.4 ghz and there was no change in temps.

If the heatsink is cool, that usually means that the heat is staying in the processor, and not warming the heatsink. What thermal compound do you have on the core? Thermal pad? Arctic Silver? Silicone grease?

I'm using Arctic Silver 5. the first time i thought that it wasn't seated, so I took it off and looked at the residue. It had spread to a nice even circle around the heatsink and the processor. I cleaned and reapplied.

I reapplied the same way, and i get the same identical temps. I overclocked to 2.45 mhz and the temps don't change a bit under load. They remain 45 idle to 49-50 under load.

I think those temps are alright. My system is in the high 40s - XP 2400+ mobile @ 2.1GHz. It used to be in the mid 50's though. I'm in an unairconditioned dorm room right now, and the room temp would sometimes reach 30C just a few weeks ago.

i'm convinced that my motherboard is just not reporting correct temps. I' guessing they are reporting about 10degC higher than what they really are.. idle at 45 and at load after 6 hrs of Prime95 they reach around 53C. LIke i said i already removed and placed the AS5 and heatsink once. I even used a smaller sized BB of the AS5 the second time. The first time when I took it off there was a perfect circle around the center of the Heatsink.
