High Temps with E8400 and Tuniq Tower 120

So I put in my E8400 yesterday into my DS3L and am a bit concerned with my temps.

At stock speeds it was Idle at around 37-40C with room temps around 20C. At load it would get up over 50C. Overclocked to 4.05GHZ (450x9) with 1.29v(1.26v under load) the temps under load were ~67C. Getting close to unsafe for this chip as some have said. I just took off my tuniq and took couple of pics of my MX-2 application.

Did I use too much? It looks pretty even to me, but I know the pics are bad. I am thinking about just lapping the Heatsink while I have it out. Will that help much if I don't do the CPU too?

Any Ideas would be appreciated.

i get pretty much the same temps at you with my coolermaster hyper tx2 using the push-pin design for mounting it. also using ceramique. i would advise lapping the heatsink then see what your temps turn out to be. if they are still high go ahead and do the cpu. the application looks fine to me. i would use a bit less next time tho.

i lapped the cpu & ultra 120... they both needed it, the ultra 120 needed it even more than the cpu i found out. I put a thin spread of AS5 on there after i was done, tighted the bolts down. and im running same speed as you 450x9 primed after an hour was at 70/70C Load closed up in the case, with warm ambients in the house. but im also using 1.4v on the cpu via bios. its about 1.33 in Cpu-z I think the temps will drop more if i get a 120mm exhause fan to go behind the TRU & drop the Vcore down a little.

EDIT: I need some better ram, im ram limited as it wont go above 930mhz without causing errors in Orthos. Anyone willing to trade some ddr2 1066 2 gigs for some ddr2 800 2 gigs + some cash? Or just straight cash?

I suggest you reseat your Tuniq Tower, apply a VERY thin strip of thermal paste down the middle of the IHS on the CPU.

I went out and got some 400, 600, 800, and 1000 grit sand paper to lap my Heatsink. looking at it on a mirror it is pretty concave. But the CPU isn't exactly perfect either. I think i'll start off by lapping the Heatsink and applying less TIM and see how much that helps.

I don't know why your temps are like that. I have a smaller heatsink/fan, the Zalman 9500 LED. The CPU is at 1.3V and my temps at load average 60 to 62 degrees C with dual Prime95. This is also at the same speed as yours, 4050MHz (9 x 450). I use SpeedFan 4.34 B37 since the other temp monitoring tools I've tried either don't work with Vista 64-bit or give me inaccurate temperatures.

Well I finished lapping my tuniq and put it back in with a bit less MX-2. Coretemp still says 45 idle, 68 under load... fuckin lame. Maybe it is just reading wrong. I tried installing that version of speedfan but vista 64 just says it stopped working and gives me a button to close program. Doesn't even install. Not really seeing how mature and driver freindly vista 64 is like everyone says. had to go buy a new wireless card since there are no vista 64 ones for my old one. Grrr...

After doing some research it seems this is a pretty common thing going on. Many thing the Bios is reading the temps wrong. One reason I agree with this is that when I turn up my fan from 1k RPM to 2k RPM the temps don't change at all. Oh well, i'm running 4050MHz with 1.296v prime stable for 8hours+. I guess i'm good.

Did you try Core Temp 0.96 to check the temperatures?

Out of curiosity what does Gigabyte EasyTune5 report for the CPU/Northbridge?

Yes those temps were using 0.96.1

I haven't used easytune5. Just got done with a game of Supreme Commander. Ran great at 1900x1200 4xAA max settings.
