High Temp with Athlon/1.33 & MSI K7Master

Heyas. I am running a AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz CPU with a
Swiftech MC370-OA on a MSI K7Master motherboard. I
have the bus at 133 Mhz and the multiplier set to 10x
in the BIOS and voltage set to default.

When I applied the heatsink, I put the thermal goo that
came with the cooler onto the core (The metal square)
but not on the rest of the CPU. I ensured that there was
a thin film, just so that I could just barely see the core
but thick enough so that it was still white, just like I've
read on all hardware guides.

Now, the Health Monitor in the BIOS says the CPU is running
at 150 F, which sounds really high to me. According to
Tom's hardware, it should be running at about 112-115 F, but
is this because I'm not using Artic Silver, but rather the
generic goop that came with the cooler? Did I do something
wrong?

Anyway, the Swiftech Cooler is warm so it must be working
and the fan is spinning quite nicely, so I'm not sure what
else to do. Should I take off the cooler, clean off the
generic goop and put on Arctic Silver Goop instead?

What about the actual temp probe itself? Have they been
known to be inaccurate? (Still...)

(OK, Goop = Thermal Heat Transfer Paste.. but you try saying
THTP and then expect everyone to know what you are talking
about. :) )

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. For a $75 cooler,
you'd think it would be doing a better job.

Thanks. :)

Qualin,

Check out my post that I was literally typing when you posted yours -

My Thread

We need to discuss this! That is too, too, too weird...just the fact that we have such similar setups...

Qualin,

the K7Master reads higher temps than the mb that TomsHardware uses for what htey call testing(and I say this because their tests SUCK).

In order to determine whether you're running beyond "reasonable temps", we need to know your ambient case temp, your case cooling, and what program you are using to load your cpu.

Also, you cannot at all compare your temps to other motherbaords, and can only sort of compare against your same mb.

Well, the case is just a simple Super-Mid Tower with a
fan in the front sucking air into the case and then just
a standard power supply out the back. Ambient temp I believe
is 26 C (About 90 F) according to the motherboard. I expect
the temps to be higher than if one cut holes in the case,
I just need to know if this is normal. :/

Oh yeah, before I forget.. I'm not using any programs
to "heat" the CPU per say.. I'm just running it at idle.
I shudder to think what the CPU temp is fully loaded.
