High-Tech Degrees Don't Guarantee Jobs

I mean I already knew from my own personal situation, but atleast awareness is growing. I now have a nagging question about how I will deal with the inevitable next downturn. It's really frustrating how despite all the work and studying I've done I ultimately don't really have any control over where my career path goes.

I don't believe I have anywhere asked to have a guarantee for a job. I just want a chance to show I can be a productive engineer.

Welcome to P&N. You heard the President. You must go back to Community College and get a degree in stocking shelves at Walmart or wiping a patients a$$ (no disrspect meant to Nurse out there).

There is no High-Tech in America and they want it that way.

I think tech jobs suffer from high supply and lowering demand (due to offshoring). There are SO many people getting tech degrees out there right now and so many universities offer these degrees that the tech job market is experiencing a glut. I don't really care though. I'm a CS major for more altruistic reasons.

What kind of degree? WHen did you graduate? How many resumes have been sent out?

BS. You DO ultimately control your path. No one tells you what to choose(unless you are married;)). It's nice to try to blame this or that or the other thing for what you or others percieve as "failure" - but in reality, only you can decide your path.
There are no guarantees in this world, except death and taxes - nobody is going to hold your hand throughout life - it's time to realize that and take responsibility for your own life. Yes things suck, the tech industry took a hit - but it is coming around, and it isn't the ONLY thing people can do(even with a tech degree).

Now once you realize that you do ultimately control your life's path - PM me with your Quals.(didn't we trade PMs a while back? or was that someone else?)
Anyway - Cali is hella competitive for Engineering(on all fronts). We just lost one of our guys who came here from Cali because he couldn't stand being unemployed and so he broadened his search(location). He's now going back to Cali because his buddy(who was laid off when he was) has started up an Engineering dept in a manufacturing corp(they outsourced before). Anyway - buck up. Life sucks and then you die - it's your job to steer the ship.

You may want to look into starting your own business. One of my friends started his information systems solutons consulting business that caters to small/med companies. He's been doing very nicely the past few years. Maybe you could start your own consulting business in your field??

It's from dmcowen, why did you even bother reading it? Everything he says is grossly exaggerated or downright fiction.

How much of the Probes were made in the U.S.? Was any coding done in the U.S.? Oh wait, maybe it was coded in the U.S. and that is why the software code croaked.

Any Mars Probes Engineers posting on AT care to enlighten us on the facts?

You seriously believe that the software for that probe was outsourced to some foreign company, and the components were made in China??????????????????

And WTF is that crack about the "software croaked". They have one major problem after an otherwise perfect mission that involved thousands of components both hardware and software and you think that it somehow reflects poorly on the US that thier was an unforseen interaction????? Are you seriously smoking crack or just trying to be funny.

I don't see any other countries doing it??? Flight control software is one of the hardest most complicated types of control software around, even disregarding the fact that you are adding in the space factor. Those Indians you are always harping about??? They haven't managed to master the development of this type of software yet as is evidenced by the huge delays in the development of thier only significant military aircraft (home grown) the LCA which has been hindred from day 1 by the fact that they couldn't come up with the software.

You are just being insulting now.

No, he's just being dave. It's always funny how the armchair engineers like to complain about everything but Red Dawn has summarized Dave's character up fairly well in an earlier post which I will not link to. Most people couldn't make a liquid fuel rocket go more than 10 feet without exploding into a fireball, and dave is critisizing a 100 MILLION mile mission that began with landing probes entering the atmosphere at 12,000 miles per hour with tempatures ranging from -70 F to 40 F (or so?) in exactly the correct spot, and then using them as a giant, golf-cart sized remote control car with thousands upon thousands of components, redundant components, and backup components for the redundant components operating in extreme tempatures on unfamiliar terrain that no one has explored before with the most carefully reviewed code written by the best engineers in the world who were then reviewed by the second best engineers in the world. The amount of interaction with the general public has been the highest in the history of NASA, with over 4 BILLION hits to the marsrover subdomain of NASA alone.

None of the EE seniors with GPAs higher than 3 have had any problems finding jobs whatsoever. Of course, this is in Texas, so YMMV elsewhere.

You imbiciles want your competative world. Well there are billions of people out there who need a bowl of rice. You'll find out what a free market means.

When those billions of people start voting for non-oppresive/socialist/communist/fascist/totalitarian governments to represent their interests, they might see things start to change.

Meanwhile...... here is a bowl of rice.

Dave, sometimes you SO FAR OFF BASE it isn't even even funny.

Do you find anything worthy of praise, or do you just walk around spreading doom & gloom to others?

Now I know why they call you "Chicken Little".......

hahahaha

Yes, other countries have the experience and engineering knowledge to make & send Mars rovers. Haven't you noticed all of those robots they've been sending to Mars?

A degree has never guaranteed a job.
Yeah....hello! Where do these people come from and who the hell told them "if you get a college degree, it's like getting a lifetime unlimited guarantee against unemployment." DUH!

Believe in a false notion, they will find-out its false sooner or later. Don't fault those responsible for busting your bubble, fault the bubble.

There are quite a few things that contribute to the ever-changing marketability of one's skills and talents, none of them are singularly absolute; experience, training, education, work ethic, character, acceptance of change.

I'm sure that blacksmiths had a fit over the automobile. Some probably just sat around, cursing the automobile, that new fangled auto-buggy is DEBIL! Then died a bitter and penniless old turd, clutching his Blacksmith certificate to his chest. Unable to pry his old gnarled clutch away from it, they just buried him like that. Family members discover a religious shrine to the Horse and Buggy at his home, along with a photograph of Henry Ford sporting Devil horns and a diabolical moustache.

Good riddance.

Those that can't vote freely, can still support regime change.

Don't you?

Yup we can vote to take from the rich and give to the poor as a form of competative weight training. Carrying the extra weight of the poor will make the rich stronger allowing them to earn more.
