High-Speed Storage For Laptop

Laptop hard drives are weak (7200RPM max).

Any way to hook up either 15,000RPM SCSI or IDE Raid to a laptop (firewire or some other means)? I would like to do some video editing, but a laptop drive is just too slow.

actually the fastest laptop hdd at present is a 5400rpm model.
the 7200rpm laptop hdd are supposed to be out later this year!

what about a NAS (network attached storage). there is some big, fast NAS systems, but they are expensive. or you could go USB 2.0/Firewire and find a enclosure that has RAID 0 support. drop some WD SE drives in there, stripe 'em, and then you've got cheap, fast storage.

Have you seen any such solutions for sale? If so, can you post a link?

Many thanks,

as soon as i said that, i went looking for it. sadly, i can't seem to find it. i found plenty of SCSI RAID enclosures, but no IDE RAID ones. it seems like a relatively simple device, but i guess there isn't the demand for IDE RAID like there is for SCSI RAID. maybe soon there will be a SATA RAID enclosure, as SATA and Serial SCSI are supposed to be compatible.

You can find ide raid or firewire raid enclosures pretty easy, Promise makes some IDE ones, and I've found a bunch of firewire ones by checking google.

What do you need that kind of speed for? You might as well just setup a desktop and then sync the laptop and desktop after working on either one. You could get a cheap Raid setup on the desktop easily.

I certainly see your point, but think about it; having a desktop requires (1) a desk (2) a MB, proc, memory, case+fans+PS, & cards. Considering the rates of power consumption, portability, availability of USB2/Firewire peripherals and the cost of LCD monitors, laptops are becoming more practical as desktop replacements (this trend likely won't slow for quite a while). I'd rather have a computer that I can use in a cafe, or hook up to my car. I can always use my trusty 400Mhz Linux box for any server stuff.

Storage is still shitty when it comes to laptops (so is ubiquitous wireless coverage). It just seems that the latter gets more attention.
