High Speed Internet Gripe

When this area got high speed internet about 4 or 5 years ago, it was $55 a month. I was happy to pay it, to get always on fast internet, and dump dialup.
But here it is 5 years later (maybe more), and its still the same $55 a month.
I know they have to have a lot of subscribers now. And their costs should reflect that with lower rates.
There ripping us off big time, and no competition, around here at least.

It should only run around $20, maybe $30 tops.

Why shouldn't they charge what the market will bear? They aren't a charity, you know. Broadband is a luxury. If people are willing to pay $55 that's what they should charge.

not many things cost the same now as they did 5 years ago. If you figure in inflation you are getting it cheaper. I thought the thread was going to be a bitch fest about the price going UP :disgust:

yup, good for them (and you) that they have kept your rate the same. It's no matter that they have grown in subscriptions... that's adding to their profit... the very reason they started the service.

There just not enough competition, which is what will drive the price down. Having more subscribers doesn't mean a supplier will lower its price. "eh, we already made enough this month, let's lower randym431's subscription fee"

I disagree. I am not going to get into a flame fest but to many people here take the wrong side for the sake of doig so (not you amused, other). 55$ is pretty bad, we have had it here for 4 years and it is 40$ when it used to be 60$

I think $40 a month is fair for cable / dsl. If you don't like it, go use the interent at the public library, or get cheap dial up. Broadband is a luxury.

it's uh 15/month for basic dsl service with sbc global

of course, i'd rather pay 60 from comcast for 6.0/768 service

You're leaving out the fact that when you first got it for $55, it was probably costing them $100 to provide you with service.

You disagree that a business should be allowed to charge whatever they want for their product?

Good GAWD I weep for our future. We have raised an entire generation of people who feel entitled to everything, and everyone else's rights be damned.

I believe a few high-speed internet providers will offer discounts to long-term customers. It cant hurt to give them a call and ask, the worst they can say is "No, we don't do that." If you're just sitting there waiting for them to send you a bill for $30 instead of $55 out of the blue, though, don't hold your breath.

I see your point... but I also see the counter points 🙂

Back in the early to mid eighties I think, Conpuserve Dial up use to cost $8/hr off peak and $12/hr peak time, plus long distance cost.

$14.99 a month for 768kbps with verizon. land line required.

I wish, im paying $57 a month for 1500, and only actually get about 800.

768 up + 768 down = 1536kbps

The 1500 you are paying for is the total speed...

fwiw, I pay $29.95 for the same service through my local telco.

I agree its too expensive. broadband/highspeed is not availabe in my area and if it did come available the only way I would get it is if my company paid for it. I have been using my RAS Win NT 4.0 server with a full T-1 plugged into it at work for my interent access for the past 4 years. sure i only connect at 28.8 but since I dont download anymore music or video i really dont care, besides its free.

im impatient and download alot of music, $40 seems like alot sometimes, but its not too bad considering the use i get out of it, i wouldnt pay it if all i did was general browsing though as in say...atot.

i used to game online alot, which is why i got it to start with, but i havent gamed in a while.

i'm looking forward to being bumped up to 1.5mbs from 512 in the next year or so actually 😱

it is very expensive for what you get here, but then it is only a fairly young thing in WA...

Gotcha.

I could switch to 3.0/512 for $40/month, but I don't want to lose any of my upload speed... 🙁
