High South or Northbridge Temperature

So I'm running an E6600 and DFI 975X Infinity at all stock settings. 2 GBs of RAM, Antec 180 Case with PSU fan and Top fan activated, CPU cooler is a Zalman 7700CU.

Under Speedfan my temps seem pretty high, Temp1 (I assume that's CPU right?) it's at 41C, Temp2: it's 81-83! Temp3: 49C. HD0: 47C

Anyone have any ideas? Should I invest in a southbridge cooler? And is Temp2 the southbridge or the northbridge?

Thanks!

Sounds to me like it's an incorrect reading. Touch the heatsink on the northbridge, or the southbridge. If there's no heatsink, you can touch the top of the chip with no risk of damage. If you can tolerate holding your finger against the heatsink for longer than a second, then there is absolutely no way it's up near 80C.

Temp 2 could be your vid card, especially if it's under load. Do what cubby said, touch the heatsinks and see for yourself if any of them are burning.

Well, one is ok, I can hold my finger for a while, the other one I wouldnt' say a second, but definitely by 10 seconds or so I have to jerk my finger away....

Then neither of them are 80 degrees. And that does sound very typical of today's northbridges.

Next check the video heatsink & the cpu heatsink for temperature. If they're in a bad location or the fan is in the way - have the computer run for a while, shut it down, then feel the heatsinks.

A Northbridge cooler is always a good investment, it takes heat away from the surrounding area of the PCB. This may not be what is causing your high temp, but it is certainly a good place to start

A nice silent and very effective upgrade is the HR05. If you need more cooling later on just attach an 80mm slow speed fan

You definitely need some case cooling, if your hard drive is at 47C. That's hot for an HD. It should be ~30C when idle/web browsing. And Temp 2 on DFI motherboards will always either be the Southbridge or the PWM IC temp; on my Socket 939 board, it's the PWM IC (Pulse Width Modulation Integrated Circuit) temp, from what I can tell.

The higher I overclock, the higher it goes, but, even with my processor at 2.6 Ghz, it stays well below 60C, with the processor under full load. If you're wondering where it's located (at least on almost all nForce4 DFI boards), the last post on this page has the best pic: link. It's what the guy has attached a double 40mm, clear fan to, between the cpu and the IDE connectors.
