Thinking that it's crude is one thing, and thinking that the government should be able to regulate it is another. We all have our views on what we feel is appropriate in public, but just because we think that something isn't appropriate doesn't mean that we think the goverment should control whether it's legal to display or not.
Should sounding ignorant be a crime? What if someone thinks that your beleifs are ignorant? Should you be banned from expressing them?
i agree that the government shouldnt be allowed to censor everything. sounding ignorant shouldnt be a crime, but putting it on your bumper sticker is just as bad as me rubbing my religion in your face. i dont do that, because you dont want to deal with that or be exposed to it. well, i think the same thing about that bumper sticker, just flip it around.
i know this could be attacked from an infinite number of angles, but swear words IMO should be kept off of bumpers and billboards. its socially not acceptable at work, and anything i would be scared to say at work i dont think i should really say to anyone at all. just my opinion.
If we're going to compare it to religion, should plastic "Jesus Fish" be kept off of cars, just like the bumper sticker that says "Fvck Bush"? Should it be unacceptable to wear crosses around your neck at work?
Also, what's acceptable at work varies from one workplace to another.
i meant to put a sentence in there about your typical office setting. ive worked at a few places where swear words were almost required.
anyway, back on topic...
i wasnt making a comparison to religion as a whole. but now that you bring it up, ill tell you why i feel there is a fundamental difference in f*** bush compared to the jesus fish.
the jesus fish is displaying an opinion - the faith of the person in the car, their opinion on religion. that is no different than the bumper sticker. however, one of them is clearly derogatory and the other is not. gay pride bumper stickers are odd to me as well, and while i dont support gays for the most part, i certainly respect their decision to be happy about their lifestyle. they should not be limited to display that because it isnt hurting anyone, neither is the jesus fish.
while the bumper sticker with the F word is also not directly hurting anyone, nothing good can come from using the F word. i have no problem with anti-bush signs, stickers, whatever, but using foul words doesnt help the cause. i would also claim a lot of people who would normally have an open ear to the persons opinion about bush would be turned off by that bumper sticker simply because it is crude. i place myself in that category.
edit: let me expand on why i think it is stupid to use the F word in public like that. if you walked into a store and started yelling at the cashier because you got bad service and call her a f***ing b!tch because she is slow or incompetent, the reaction will be very negative and nothing good will come from that. while this is not a direct comparison to the situation at hand, it is relatively similar in presentation of expressing an idea. if you start off by being crude, i would think most people will instantly tune you out or only half listen. whether or not you agree with religion is up to you, but a massive majority of people are religious and a good number of them probably find swear words to be distasteful. so when i say most, i am talking about them, but not limiting it to them because there are obviously non-religious people that realize the pointless use of words that dont help express their opinions/beliefs.
dont deny that if i walked up to you on the street and said hey f***er whats up? you would be like umm what the heck? who are you and why are you talking to me like that? it just shouldnt be used. there is no good reason.
