High schoolers say a lot of things...

Edit: Reading more thouroughly now...
Three in four students said flag burning is illegal. It's not. About half the students said the government can restrict any indecent material on the Internet. It can't.
This would explain P&N...

Keep in mind that children often have little to no experience with free speech. Most are censored from birth.

to be honest, i sort of agree. displaying the F word on your bumper sticker is too much. i realize there are many angles to that, and its just an example, but a good one IMO.

the bottom line is everyone gets freedoms unfortunately...i say that because idiots get them as well. its hard to be fair to non-idiots when idiots abuse or exploit the system.

dont take my post the wrong way...i dont want this to turn into P&N.

These aren't just children. This is the end of compulsory education in the U.S. I think they should have a little more than the barest glimmerings of an idea about how the world works.

We're not talking about "yelling fire in a crowded theater" or something like that... these kids think that every newspaper article should have a stamp of approval from the U.S. government before its printed.

Excuse me, wasn't the whole point of "free speech" the ability to say something WITHOUT the approval of someone else?

All most High Schoolers care about is getting their little wikis wet and getting money off their parents.

Explain.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!

You mean the people who use that word the most often?

its just crude notfred. i dont care if you make the personal choice to sound ignorant in front of other people, but there are much better ways to express yourself than by using a socially taboo word. if you have to use a word that carries such dogma on its back to express yourself, i think you should learn some new words.

im not saying you are like that, because i dont know you, but if you are then take it personally for all i care.

i just have a problem with people that draw attention to themselves while acting like a fool. the bumper sticker thing is just an example. that is such a poor way to show your dislike of bush (i have no problem with people liking or disliking him, thats their choice and i respect that). at least act like an adult about it.

edit: im not trying to say people who use four letter words are idiots, because that is just stupid. what i meant was there are better words to use. thats all.

It's a socially taboo word because we continue to allow it to be taboo. If everyone used it, suddenly it wouldn't be a bad word anymore.

Thinking that it's crude is one thing, and thinking that the government should be able to regulate it is another. We all have our views on what we feel is appropriate in public, but just because we think that something isn't appropriate doesn't mean that we think the goverment should control whether it's legal to display or not.

Should sounding ignorant be a crime? What if someone thinks that your beleifs are ignorant? Should you be banned from expressing them?

i agree, but at this point it still is taboo.
