High School Students: Summer reading assignment?

What book(s) did you have to read?

I have to read "The Eyre Affair," by Jasper Fforde. I don't quite understand the logic behind forcing students to read a book that in no way is a classic or something I will remember even one MONTH later.

No books to read, but I have to write a report about my internships. I was placed in two places so I have to do double the work 🙁

That is BS, I would have never done it. Teachers don't work during the summer, so why the hell should I have to.

And my mother just retired from teaching for 35 years. She never worked during the summers.

EDIT::I'm out of college now and working full time, just for perspective.

For English Literature AP, I had to read "A Handmaid's Tale" and "Brave New World" and write a compare/contrast essay over the summer. It was a BS assignment but I still managed a 4 on the AP 🙂

I had to read 3 books off a farily extensive list during the summer for a total of 25% of our first period's grade. I blew them off and got like a 66% average, but still managed an A in the class. There's no way I'm reading something I'm not interested in over the summer. Not to say I didn't read at all. Just not that crap.

You don't have to do it since you get new classes the next year unless you are in some kind of weird private school that is.

My favorite summer reading book was A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.

Great read. I aced the test when it was given in the fall. 🙂

I'm guessing the OP is in an Honors/AP class where everyone is expected to have done the summer reading..

We got off fairly easy this year. For English 4 AP (senior) we had: Atonement, The Things They Carried, and How to Read Literature Like a Professor. We also had to watch the movie Big Fish. Of course we had to annotate and stuff.

This was much easier than last year. Last year we had 4 rather long books and we had to write a whole bunch of short essays.

The Things They Carried is awesome. I read it in a college history class. Consider yourself lucky to have it assigned; there are few better books out there. 🙂

I took 2 ap classes when I was in high school, english classes, and never had to do this so unless this was just added in the last few years.

I never understood how they can make you do this since you get new classes the next year unless the book was suggested for the class you are taking.

It was good. Have you read any other of Tim O'Brien's novels? They are supposed to be very similiar.

I'm glad we never had summer reading assignments. It doesn't make sense to me to make kids read books that they have no interest in. Forcing them to read something they hate will just make them hate reading altogether.

You know what classes you are going to be taking the next year. So, you know you are gonna be taking English ____, then you read the books assigned to that class. Incoming students (transfers, freshmen, etc) get letters in the mail telling them what to read.

Welcome to education.

Never had to do any work during summer (im in Canada)

this is my summary of high school english (I just finished gr12, senior year english this past june)

Read the sparks notes, wrote the essay. Bullsh1tted enough to get a C or higher, a low A in my gr12....

Cool thing is, finally after all the bullsh1t that we had to read (or atleast i read summaries of... or parts of the summary), they let us choose our own Canadian and International authord' novel. I chose some random canadian book that I skimmed through (the book was pretty new so i couldnt find any summaries... 🙁 ) and Battle Royale which was the best book ive ever read.

Oh so True. I remember reading the book Johnny Tremain twice for school. I also remember i mentioning to my parents about reading the book, and my dad was like "not that book again" and such. He said he read it growing up too.

On another note, for my AP US history, we had to read/skim over a few chapters in a book that we had to pick up from school before school started. I don't recall having to write an essay for it though. Luckily for me, I didn't have any required reading for AP European History.

I never had work over the summer in HS.

Though I attended separate Chinese classes during my HS years and they always gave a pile of summer work...which I hated, but it helped keep my language skills up.

LOL..... This is by far the funniest bloody thing I've seen in the past three days!!!!!!!! Thanks for that.

Oh, and STFU. Even if you have to work during the summer, it isn't going to be that hard. Welcome to the real world. And about the whole thing that teachers not having to work, and the students having to during summer. Deal with it. That's how it is. Boss can do stuff, other people don't get to, all that. Cry me a river...
Tas.

We never had to read books during the summer when I was in grade school. You guys are getting shafted. 😀

Out of all the books we had to read in school, I remember like 4 of them.

Where the Red Fern Grows
The Scarlet Letter....... (this book sucked hard)
The Great Gatsby
To Kill a Mockingbird...... (excellent book)
