Good, high school sports are retarded and exist to: create self-masturbatory groups of students and faculty and spend money that could be spent doing useful things like...actually *learning*. Now if you WANT to learn sports and physical fitness related stuff, then sure, that's cool. All the high schools I went too spent tons and tons of cash on their sports activities to the extent that actual academics suffered, computers were ancient, transportation aging, because they would do things like spend tens of thousands on new lightning for the field while the biology class lacked textbooks and the computer labs were woefully inadequate... The high schools I went too even the faculty looked down upon anyone who didn't participate. All it does imho is make the kids ultra "patriotic" for their school woohoo gotta have that pride I guess? I doubt anything has changed as from what everyone I know says, it's been that way forever...

School should be about...learning...now if you wanna learn sports I guess then that's cool but don't force the rest of us to waste our time. I was in great shape in high school too, I rode my bicycle everywhere...

Course, the sports retardation works its way everywhere in our society it seems, athletes paid millions and millions while people actually doing things to better our people and society get paid crap...life's not fair though, that's the way it goes ^_^

How much money does it take to run around the neighborhood? What did all these progams do before they were spending tens of thousands of dollars on the latest high tech equipment? Oh yeah they made do and turned out great student athletes

How about returning to a time when schools were a place of learning instead of football players, cheerleaders and pep rallies.

The kids need to exercise. Bunch of fat lards dozing in their books. How about returning to a time when fitness was something to strive for?

That's a great idea. Make PE classes mandatory for the entire 4 years to graduate. PE classes teach all the same types of leadership skills that team sports do, (or they can when taught properly) they provide the exercise to get the fat lards off their asses, (and by making it mandatory for ALL students for the entire HS term, you should end up with fewer fatasses on graduation day...
Mandatory PE fucks up the Nerds GPA.

Good, cut all the sports programs and have it become less of a focus in school. America doesn't need any more top-notched athletes, we need more scientists and engineers. If the sports program is so successful we wouldn't have so many fat kids.

How much do illegal crimmigrants attending public schools burden the system? Healthcare? I am talking nationwide, I saw figures just for L.A. and Cali last year and it was astonishing., that would be a start.

If these figures are correct is cost a whopping $338.3 Billion dollars a year!

If High school sports go, then College sport programs and Pro sports will also suffer it will be a cascading affect. Sports related college scholarships will also disappear which in many cases is a way out for the poorer demographic.

Boot camp style PE? It would be much cheaper, schools really do spend too much on emulating professional sports. And to what gain?

It's been a while ( 😱 ) but I'm pretty sure my HS required 4 years of PE. I didn't realize it wasn't mandatory anymore.

As far as the gain... Athletics are an after school activity - an alternative to hanging at the mall. 😉 If we're going to cut athletic programs should we cut band, choir, drama, etc programs too?

My HS required 4 years of PE (an every other day class). I'm pretty sure it's a requirement throughout NY for graduation. I don't think it's changed in the 2 years since I graduated HS.

Unfortunately, the fat in your school system budget is probably where they can't cut, or can't cut easily-the bloated teacher salaries and benefits.

What??? Never heard of rich schoolteachers. Isn't most of the money spent outside of the classroom and not on making teachers rich?

Maybe try cutting the 6-figure salaries of the useless admin positions first.

How come I seemingly have a vision of a group of pencil necked geeks suddenly finding an outlet because they didn't or couldn't play sports and were unpopular in high school? That seems like a great reason to try and cancel high school athletics.......

I absolutely agree and I wish the same sports recession was happening in my country where more money is spent on fancy gymnasiums than text books and science labs.

While some schools certainly go way overboard in their programs by spending a disproportionate amount on "new sports stuff," I think it's absolutely ridiculous to take away non-scholastic activities, such as sports, from our kids.

The phrase "well rounded" comes to mind -- the balance of physical and intellectual prowess.

My guess is that the two of you spent a lot of time stuffed in a locker, or something just as equally traumatic...

"Bitter, table for two please!"

lol.. nerds...

Or, possibly.......it's a bunch of people that saw a disproportionate amount of funding funneled into sports that were played by a small percentage of students, instead of being used to benefit the entire student body??

I remember, back in the olden days when I was in high school, that sports ALWAYS got funded 100%, even though less than 10% of the student body participated in them. Other groups in the school were forced to go out and raise money if they wanted to do anything, since all the taxpayer money was funneled to sports. The group I was part of got off their big fat butts, raised money the old fashioned way, and was able to participate in some fun projects, while we saw our prized athletes get handed anything they asked for, time after time.

But hey, I guess it's fair, since I'd bet <1% of them ever made it as a professional athlete!

Im sure you took into account a much larger % of students who get scholarships or some other financial aid for college because of athletics, allowing them to get a college education that may have otherwise been out of reach....right?

Funny I read the entire article and the big issue had to do with the failing economies in local areas in these states which directly impacted the sale tax revenues used to fund high school sports. For example the Florida high school mentioned in the article was suffering because of high gas prices and the lack of tourist which has created a short fall of sales tax revenue to fund high school sports. Of course I understand people need their scape goats. Got to have some one or some group to react in a knee jerk fashion to lynch and hang AMRITE !

Wow, Mount Vernon is a legend among high school athletics. Such a tragic turn of events for their student-athletes.
