High resolutions and small text problem

As you can see from my sig, I have this amazing 27" dell monitor. How, high resolution is really nice as you can have many things stuffed in your desktop area. However, reading text is a real problem at least for me. Upping the DPI does make it readable but it screws other things. Some apps will have their text not in its intended place or not really centered anymore. Somehow, the format just gets f**ked up.

Nosquint add on for firefox is nice but if you also zoom in the text, the same problem will occur. I can only do full zoom and it will be fine. But you know, that will only help while browsing the web. Other computer tasks/apps will still suffer.

So, is it me doing something stupid or it is just like this? And how bad is it really to lower the resolution and use the monitor not at its native resolution? If no probs come up while in non-native resolution mode, I'll just keep it that way and enjoy the overall zoomed in image.

Thanks.
