High Resolution = Smaller icons?

I know high resolution is all the rage for gaming, but does anybody else find it difficult to perform everyday tasks at higher resolution? When I use Microsoft Word at high resolution, I can barely read the report I am writing due to how small it is. I use a 22 inch Samsung monitor do I need to upgrade to a 24 inch monitor, or is there a way to increase the resolution to get better detail and still keep the larger icons and work area of lower resolutions?

Sorry if this question seems too elementary.

Thanks in advance for any response.

I am running Vista, and I do use a lower resolution. I am just curious if anybody else feels the same as me, or am I just kind of crazy?

I love having icons as small as possible, except when it comes to My Picture Folder. but for desktop I have them very small.

Minimize all the windows you have open (if any), then press and hold the "Ctrl" key and scroll up or down with your mouse wheel. This will allow you to increase or decrease the size of the icons from your desktop.

Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings (I think, not in Vista now) > [Change Font Size] will be on the horrible looking sidebar. That should do the trick for you.

Edit:
Here is an article on Microsoft Help with a wee bit more information.

Well, everything is smaller, not just icons, right? Text, menu items, etc. Seems part of the definition of "higher resolution"

Yeah, I suggest a 26 for most people. I love a 24, it's perfect for my eyes, but some folks have a hard time reading them. Those extra 2 inches go a long way.

that's what she said

Which 25.5" could that be? 🙂

Some people think things look to pixellated on a 25.5/26, but to my 40 year old eyes, everything looks just about right on it.
