DDR isn't going to become obsolete anytime soon.

In the sense that they won't be producing DDR1 soon he is right.

Got a reputable source to support that statement? :) FWIW PC100/133 is still widely available and it's been "obsolete" for years. DDR isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

LOL...... PC100/133 Is that still being produced...I think not! Or even MB's that support it, No. Why! because there is no demand.
Don't get me wrong DDR1 will still be around for a while yet, As long as there is a demand and DDR1 MB's are being produced. with Intel 775 & AMD M2 it is only a matted of time`before the transition to DDR2 becomes main steam as happened with the PC100/133 to DDR1.
This is inevitable.
In a couple of years, maybe sooner we are going to see DDR3 but that transition will not be so quick.
I do not need a source written by someone to tell you that.

I service computers for a living, and I still sell a lot of SDRAM to people with older P3/P4 and AMD rigs that do not wish to spend a lot of cash on upgrades. Add 128-256MB PC100/133 to a 300+Mhz rig and they can migrate from a pre-XP OS just fine. Most of these people are casual users anyhow.

People that say DDR1 is going to be obsolete soon probably don't work in the industry and think everyone uses state of the art computers. Unfortunately that is not the case. DDR isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

another question is: when will prices be reasonable? (reasonable= ~$60/1gb)

if conroe is a reason to jack up prices, then vista beginning of next year will be an even bigger reason...

Absolutely. There are also hundreds of companies selling millions of embedded devices, many of which run on "slower" hardware than todays desktop standards. PIII's are the backbone of a lot of these boxes, and motherboards are still produced in oddball form factors to this day, and scheduled for years ahead. These devices are *designed* to use this hardware, and don't need now (or ever will) more computing power. What RAM do many of these devices use? PC100 and PC133. How do I know? I work for one of these companies...

the theory was ..amd moving to ddr2 would LOWER memory prices. :)

All that ddr production could now be switched to ddr2.

So maybe things will settle DOWN sooner rather than later ...unless the memory guys are back to price fixing.

Its called price gouging, here in tx we call it the "good ol boy system". They have to pay all those legal fees/fines for price fixing somehow.

I'm not mad at all. Memory prices go up and memory prices go down, that's the way life is.
I don't begrudge companies making a profit. If they don't make a profit they go out of business and I can't buy their products.
Goodbye Value America, how we loved you. :(

Same as I buy gasonline... If I need it I buy it, no matter what the price.

Am I the only non-socialist here?

Wow, that's awesome even if it does have a $100 MIR... not too psyched about that, but it is newegg, which means they're about as reliable as you can get for rebates. Are they have this kind of special on all crucial memory, or just certain memory?

is this just the back to school season madness, and therefore we will see reductions before the holiday season bangs them up again?
