high quality surge protecter?

what do you guys recommend to keep a new rig safe, and what is the most important feature of a surge protecter? i've had one for my old comp the last 4 years, but dont remember what the specs are anymore.

Something in the realm of 3000 joules is the right idea for the right cost. .These can be found anywhere up to Hundreds of dollars down to $20-30.... You get what you pay for but keep in mind that some of the super expensive sell on their "name" and marketing fluff, and some of the cheaper ones don't offer the filtering that the $$$ ones do.

I've found that the $60-80 range is a good target price... try APC, or Tripp-lite if you want a known excellent name, and something you know will work.

I'd also look into just getting a UPS, as they offer more out of the box in the way of line conditioning, and you get the ability to stay up during brownouts/voltage fluxuatiuons.

I use TrippLite and swear by them. During an electrical storm last year, a close lightening strike blew my home's power. The Tripplite surge protector on my computer (which was turned on at the time) saved both the computer and model by sacrificing itself in a puff of blue smoke and smell of burning toast. This was a 2,850 joule protector.

I emailed Tripplite, and on their instructions returned my melted surge protector to them aong with my proof of purcahse. They replaced it within 3 weeks with an up to date unit at no charge. It comes with an unlimited warranty, I think. No hassle, and very happy with both performance and service.

By the way.... In addition--you should replace the surge protector every three years as they don't last/protection doesn't last forever.

You don't need to replace a surge protector if you are willing to refurb it yourself. All you need is a handful of MOVs and sometimes a few other devices (transorbs et al.) and a soldering pencil.

Yes and no..... I have a good surge protector protecting my UPS and most other items I want on all the time even though my UPS has always on ports..... 😛 I figure that way I'll get potentially more life out of my UPS and only need to swap batteries.

Another vote for Triplitte!

I can attest that the Air Force loves them for rack equipment in thier wiring closets. If your looking for an UPS I would take a hard look at Belkin. If your going the PC protection route I would spring for the UPS solution like WackyDan suggested since it helps smooth out the power a bit more.

CyberPower sells excellent UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation). They also come with a full 3 yr. warranty and their RMA service is first class.

Newegg sells them for a nice price.

CyberPower Systems 825AVR

Yeah, I'd take a "hard look" at Belkin - give 'em the hairy eyeball and walk on by... Belkin exists solely to help the big-box stores make a profit, nothing more.
