There's a high pitched noise coming from what seems to be my PSU (or the motherboard). It seems to change in intensity as the system goes under load.

I am running the components in my sig with a 1 month old Corsair VX450. Could the buzzing be a sign of dying components, or is it relatively normal?

The PSU is not plugged into a UPS. It is simply plugged into a surge protector (this one: http://www.usa.philips.com/c/power-...=149661F7EA3D44B8C9CE02D33FE6C260.app101-drp2), which is in turn plugged into a wall outlet.

Could be coil whine from the PSU. Do you have another PSU to isolate whether it could be the motherboard? I've only noted some buzzing from my VX450 when it kicks in to battery backup, but other than that it is quiet.

Under what type of load?

Also, try it plugged directly into the wall socket just to eliminate the suppressor.
