I have a maxtor drive that makes funny noises, it works alright though. I don't think it made a high pitch noise, but it was making a god awful grinding noise. I say alright because it did crash once or twice. Did a scan disk and a low level format and it works fine now.

Never hurts to back up your stuff though.
