High pitched squeal from computer

This noise is driving me crazy. It's an extremely high-pitched squeal that varies in intensity with the load my computer is under. It really kicks up when I run something stressful like a game or Prime95. Could this be from the CPU or RAM? It's definitely not coming from anything mechanical, I've pretty much elimitated all the fans and drives. All the components are about a year old, the CPU is an athlon 3200 that was an absolute dud OC'er. Been running it at 2200 MHz at 1.5v since I got it, could it be giving up the ghost? I have had a couple stability anomalies over the past wekk (1 BSOD, 1 fail to post), but for the most the system is still stable, no random reboots or crashes-to-desktop. Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Google images of toroidal coil, it just *might* be one of them getting talkative.

Do you have a spare VGA card to use for a bit, to see if the noise goes away?? If so, try it.
If you present card is OCed, reduce it to stock and see if that helps.
Are any board capacitors venting, domed, swelling or tilting?? If so this can cause the toroids to talk.

Sometimes a good dot of hot glue on each side of the offending toroid will reduce the noise to
acceptable levels.

Sounds like what?s commonly known as "coil whine". Interactions with particular components seems to be the cause the majority of the time.

Most of the time it seems to be either a particular motherboard or video card in combination with certain PSUs. It doesn?t necessarily mean there is any wrong with your hardware but I wouldn't rule that out until you've checked for failing caps.

Thanks for the replies. I checked the caps and all the ones I could see looked ok. If it was from a coil would the whine be affected if I pressed or wiggled it? I tried that when I was checking the caps and it didn't seem to affect it. I'll go through it again and make sure I get to all the caps and coils to check them. It's probably also worth mentioning that I haven't changed any hardware in this machine for several months and the whine just showed up this week.
