High-Pitched Noise

Hello all. I am running a new Thinkpad T60, and just noticed that the machine emits a faint, high-pitched noise. It is not immediately detectible, but if you are obsessive about your computer like I am and try to listen for it, it is noticeable. I cannot determine if it is coming from the hard disk area or the fan area, but I am guessing it is the fan area.

Does anyone know whether this is normal or whether I should be concerned?

laptop>heat>fan most likely. I had a high-pitched whining noise coming out of my old rig and it was an aftermarket cpu fan that continuously ran at top speed. Only occasionally, like just after being off for a while, would it not whine; but then it would start again within 5 minutes of booting.

Thank you for your response. I checked it out a bit more and I think it is definitely the fan. Is this just an annoyance that I'd have to deal with on most laptops or something that I should address? I was just concerned that it might be a sign that something was wrong.

Edit: I also noticed that the sound entirely disappears if I mess with power management settings and lower them from Maximum Performance to something like high battery performance or word processing.

I'm sure you could find a quieter fan to replace the stock fan in there.

A few thoughts to help....

1st: Use compressed air and blow out the CPU heatsink/fan. U don't need to take apart laptop, just blast the thinkpad through the ports....

2nd: Create a custom profile using the Power Manager app (thelittle battery on your sys tray). Set CPU to "Adaptive" instead of "Maximnum".

3rd: I've always noticed a faint squelching sound from thinkpads ever since the T40 series coming from the wired network card during data transfers up or down. Are you sure this isn't the noise you hear?


4th: If you're sure the fan is the culprit, and it didn't originally make this noise, you can always call support "located in Atlanta Georgia...." and see if they'll "fix" the issue for you. I've done thinkpad support with their depot and on-site for years and have had good experiences.
