Hey all!

First time in a long time putting a computer together. I get it all put together, plug it in, and instantly get a very high pitched noise. I can't for the life of me remember what that is. Help!

Thanks,
Tara

Is it coming from a small, black, round device on the motherboard? If so, that's the speaker and you need to read the manual to find out what that beep means.

You should power up the pc with the side panel removed. That should help you localize the problem.

It could either be a fan (cpu fan , power supply fan or northbridge fan) , hard drive , or pc speaker.

This high-pitched whistle is made *before* I even turn it on. Like when I first plug it in. It seems to be coming from the power supply box.

I hooked the power supply up to two other motherboards, and it still whistled.

I took a can of compressed air to the power supply thinking maybe it was just dirty. It still whistled.

Sigh.

You have a faulty power supply. I would refrain from using it, as it may damage the components in your PC.
