Well, maybe some of you remember I posted this problem about a month ago. I have a Shuttle MN31N motherboard, and a high-pitched noise was coming from the area around the CPU. It also had bad rear-audio headers, so I got Shuttle to RMA the motherboard. I just got the replacement board back today, and it has the same high-pitched noise (the audio works now)! I know I'm not hearing things, and I've built and worked on enough computers to know this is definately not normal. The tech said the board I sent in was working fine, which I find hard to believe, but they sent a replacement anyways.

So what should I do now? Should I contact the Shuttle RMA people again? I'm a bit pissed because this is the 2nd board with the same noise problem. I have used this board before when I built a system for my cousin, and her's was perfectly fine. Maybe I am just stuck in a bad streak of boards?...

EDIT: I just e-mailed the Shuttle RMA representative that I contacted previously and am hoping she has some advice as well. I'll post whatever she suggests.

Did it always do this? Try the setup outside the case. If the whine is gone, then it's probably airflow turbulence in the case. Also momentarily ...and CAREFULLY...stop the hsf fan and see if that stops the noise.

no, I guarantee it is not ANY of the fans or other devices in the system.

I attempted to remove the nVidia nForce drivers, since I have the 3.13 versions direct from nVidia. When they weren't installed, the sound goes away. Then I attempted to use the drivers from Shuttle, but then the sound came back. So it appears that the way Windows XP is interfacing with some component on the motherboard it causes the sound.

I'm going to try a fresh install of Windows with the original drivers to see what happens. I'm thinking maybe something about the drivers from nVidia are hosing it up. I have read, and experienced, in the past that the graphics drivers from nVidia didn't work properly with this board, and I was forced to use the Shuttle drivers. I've read that they changed them somehow, but I'm not sure exactly what they changed. Maybe I am experiencing a similar problem now.

Search here. These noises were reported on other Shuttle mobos as well and ppl found a way around that or could at least pin the problem.
