I have a 30GB Western Digital 7200RPM hard drive and of late, when I access anything like double clicking on a folder or move something... I hear this high pitch noise. It really only does it when it's seeking something or accessing it. Is the drive getting bad or is this normal? I've heard that this could be the power supply....it that true?

About 8 months. Do you think it's the power supply? When I put my ear inside the computer to hear where the sound is coming from, it kinda seems like it's coming from the power supply but I'm not sure because it's so damn loud. How do I tell if it's the hard drive or the ps?

Run western digital's data lifeguard diagnostics...

Run the extended diagnostic test also...

That way if it isn't your hard drive, you can mainly conclude it's your powersupply...

might want to try the general hardware forum-- maybe somebody there could offer a little more help.

the power supply sounds like it could be the cuase, it would make sense at least... The hard drive does more work when searching or accessing something, doing more work requires more power- therefor putting more of a strain on the power supply.. I've never heard of this happening before- doesnt mean its not the cause though.
