Greetings all,

More often than not, when I open a window/browser with a lot of content(small & large icons, folders, text) or email program(outlook) I hear a high pitched shrill coming from the screen( 21" Samsung Pro with 5 BNC connection) - chinese torture of sorts :( . I suspect my video card( Elsa Geforce2 32mb) may be the culprit but can not nail it down for sure. Rather odd really, for example my pictures folder with thumbnails as the view emits no noise however if you select the view to small, large icon or list the noise occurs, especially if the folder becomes maximized. Appreciate any help with this monstrosity.

Cheers!

edit - pardon my bad spelling

my parents computer does something similar when switiching between resolutions or large images - im fairly certian it is the monitor (not the vid card) in their situation, but im doubtful theres a solution (beyond sending it back).

Yes, I have a viewsonic pf815 that does it on any res over 1280X960... I thought it was bad, until I heard a 15" trinitron that did it at 1024X768... Now THAT was painful... I positive in both of these cases the monitor is the source of the problem... It is annoying, but lowering refresh and/or res. helped in both cases...

hmm, thanks for sharing y'all...

so it might be the pesky monitor after all, doh! my resolution is set at 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz. Here is my monitor. The problem with my monitor stems from a selective nature, only occuring with a certain program or folder (look above for details). Anyone have similiar experiences of this kind that proved to be otherwise - or - should i kick this monitor to the mfr. curb. No he didn't. hehe.

just as a thought to see if it is in fact the monitor, next time it happnens give you monitor a "love tap" and see if the noise sounds like it is shaking as the monitor vibrates. i have a monitor do this to me once in a while and knocking it firmly (but not killing it) sometimes will make it cease...
just a thought, but if you break ur monitor it isn't my fault... :)

Try this, When its making that noise lift the monitor up about a 1" from the sides (not the Base)
I have seen several monitors make that same noise from the constant pressure on the base
pushing up on the Pcboard. I believe it eventally cracks one of the solder joints.
