I recently upgraded my computer from an Asus EN9800GT and Athlon II X2 240 to a Powercolor 5770 and Athlon II X4 640. After installing both, I noticed that my wireless card, a Linksys Wireless-G WMP54GS, wouldn't connect to my wireless connection, even though it reported its signal strength as "excellent". It was only after installing the video drivers that I was able to connect. The strange part is that while my stats from speedtest.net and pingtest.net were the same as before I upgraded, with no noticeable changes in download and upload, and streaming video working just fine, it all goes to hell when I try to play games over the internet, such as Team Fortress 2, with my ping fluctuating between 80ms and 1400ms. The same weirdness happened when I installed my 9800 the first time, but to a lesser extent: I had to position my computer just right to that my wireless card's antenna would pick up the signal, something which I hadn't had to do before.
I wondering what could be the problem here. Could it be the power supply not supplying enough power to the wireless card? I've got a Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 500W. Could the close proximity of the new video card to the wireless card be screwing things up (the fan is touching the top of the card). Or is my wireless card just giving up the ghost? I haven't tried just ditching the wireless card and plugging in a Cat-5e just because that wouldn't be practical with my current setup.
