HIGH IDLE NORTHBRIDGE CHIPSET TEMPERATURES

my chipset temps are around 44C idle when i set the fan to be limited to 4500rpm. when i max out the chipset fan it becomes 41C idle at 7000rpm, but then i have a high pitched sound thats really bothersome.

a pic of my setup inside. (with crappy phone camera)

as you can see, my huge eVGA 7800gtx ko is placed in the lower pci-express slot. i did this in the beginning because i felt that keeping it as far away from the cpu and ram would help their temps. but now the gfx card sits on top of the edge of the northbridge fan; there is actual physical contact. also, the card is on the lower edge of the fan, so heat from the eVGA's extended heatsink rises onto the fan. That is my presumption. what do you guys think.

The mobo i have is a DFI Lanparty UT sli-dr eXpert. maybe someone with a similar card and same mobo and has the gfx card on the upper pci-e slot can describe their idle temps?

also, since i was taking pics, i took some of my computer setup. heres a view of my lian li pc-60 plus case with the attachments thru a windowed side panel.

also, i was wondering if anyone was using the lanparty ut expert board and had the zalman passive chipset heatsink. the blue Aluminum one. how is it, what are your idle temps?

I've heard mixed results from people using that Zalman passive NB sink on NF4 mobos. I have one on my NF3 Neo2 and it works great, but the NF4 seems to run quite a bit hotter. If you've got good airflow around, it might be all right, especially if you don't have a crazy OC going. They're only like $5 or something, so it can't hurt too much to try - just don't toss the stock one right away!

Check over on the DFI-Street, many threads about this.

Air solution- Vantec northbridge HSF
Water solution- Koolance GPU-180-H06 block

There are also benches between the first PCIEx16 slot vs the second PCIEx16 slot because of the placement of the northbridge. These tests were done using a 7800GTX card and enabling SLI mode making the second PCIEx16 x8 instead of x2. Basically the results were better benches using the first PCIEx16 slot.

I made mention of that because I noticed you're using the second PCIEx16 slot because of how long the GTX is.

Oh and atm I am personally using the Vantec northbridge HSF on a DFI lanparty SLI-DR board (same bothersome placement of the northbridge chipset) and although my temps are decent enough, I went ahead and ordered the waterblock for it. I would also like to add that the noise level on the vantec hsf isn't an issue.

o wow, so my performance with the card in the second slot isnt performing as well as if it were in the first? My friend who had a similar lanparty board with 2 pci-e told me he put his in the 2nd slot and performance was the same, i never doubted him. now i have to change it immediately.

another thing, is there a program that i can use to monitor the actual temps of my gpu and HD?

RivaTuner to monitor video card temps and use SpeedFan to monitor your HD (if it supports SMART)
