high fsb (5:4) or tight ram timings (1:1)

There is a long discussion of that in this thread (thanks Duvie!). In general you want to get your bus speed as high as possible. Then, only if you are at the cusp of being able to run your memory at 1:1 or with tight timings, should you consider backing off by maybe 5 - 10 MHz, to run at 1:1 or with tight timings.

Tight timings win, and NEVER give up CPU speed. CPU MHz matters much more than ram timings or ratio.

I can run this 3.0C @ 3.6GHz /1.575V / 5:4, but it just feels more responsive and snappy @ 3.42GHz / 1:1 / 456Mhz (Street Racer). Who knows, maybe I'm a knucklehead... :p

Thanks for the replies ppl....

To be fair those test were on non gaming apps and I did notice from others test that some games enjoy the ddr speed a bit more...

In theory the same is true don't sacrifice a higher clock to keep 1:1 timings, but where as so much mhz in my test help cancel the adavantage of the 1:1 and higher ddr speeds, with those gaming apps it may be a bit more then that but probably not double to cancel it out....

The main part of that original thread with help from Oldfart was to try to keep ppl from laying down big cash on these overly expensive pc4000+ ddr sticks and give ppl with older pc3000 to pc 3500 ram the word that they could stick with what they have and still have a great performing system....

thanks ppl, i just realize that i can run tighter ram timings with 5:4
that with 1:1. lol!

how low a limit would u go regarding loose timings with ram?
is 2.5-3-3-8 slow?

its the GAT/streetracer that makes it fast Techno.
off the top of my head id say GAT/streetracer is like adding 75-100fsb. (w/the same cpu mhz)
which is why my 2.4b is so fast ;) (nbs800, GAT streetracer, c2622, CPC & RDA on)

:)

I agree. Remember when we were all wondering if our 875 boards would support Prescott? The good news is they do! The bad news is, who cares? I'll stick with the Northwood for awhile longer, but if I do get the itch, an A64 looks good. I REALLY dont like the heat the P4's are putting out these days.

I am running a 2.4c at a 5/4 ratio at 200fbs Kingston pc 3500 hyper x ram at 2 2 2 5. Would I be better off to loosen the timings and increase the fbs? Just making sure I understood this thread. thanks

i think if you are running a 2.4c@200fsb you should try to up the fsb first and loosen your ram timings. after you've found an fsb that you are comfortable with start tightening your timings.

CPU first, then mem. Find your max CPU speed first, then tweak your mem settings. CPU speed is much more important than mem timings. test for stability, and bench with the applications that you use most (no SiSoft junk). See what is fastest fro the apps that YOU use.
