Hi,
I am looking into build a workstation whose main purpose will be to run a cluster of virtual machines.

I have built similar machines in the past, but it seems that from my last venture into DYI almost 10 years ago, things have gotten increasingly complicated especially in terms of avoiding compatibility pitfalls... so I hope you can help me with some advice on what parts I should pick.

My requirements:
- 20 cores / 40 threads, possibly on 1 cpu only
- 256 - 512gb ram
- a power supply that can support adding a 2nd cpu in the future
- at least 6 pci express slots

Could someone please advice me at least on the combination of CPU/Motherboard?
Thanks

It looks like you are trying to buy a Dell R730, HP DL80, or similar. Don't build something like that yourself - you slip while assembling and you destroy $2k worth of components, minimum, no recourse, no warranty, no support.

A single 20+ core Xeon costs thousands of dollars - better off going with 2CPU.

Is this for business or personal/home use?

You want a server, not a workstation.

then you build a workstation to manage said server.
