My friend, whom I've built a few gaming PC's for way back in the day has asked that I put together a rig for his friend. It's main use will be for video-editing, but he would like it to double as a gaming station.

Per the sticky:

Uses: Video editing, then gaming.
Budget: $5,000 USD
Country: US
Brand Preference: Lean towards Intel and Nvidia, but open to suggestions
Re-cycled parts to be used: Monitor, keyboard, mouse.
Overclocking: Not originally, but ability down the road would be nice
Plan to build: ASAP. Is aware that next-gen CPU and GPU's are on their way. Wants it now

I informed him that $5k is pretty huge for a budget in my mind, and he stated that it doesn't have to be (and I quote) tippity top of the line, just DAMN good.

Any suggestions? Happy to add more info if any is needed.

How hardcore is he about the gaming aspect? Does it need to be damn good at gaming or damn good at video editing, but capable at gaming?

What resolution is the monitor? With that budget, I'd probably go 4K IPS. Dell P2715Q for instance. (EDIT: or Acer XB280HK which is TN but G-Sync). GTX 980 SLI to drive.

Checking for clarification on all of these.

That RAM is incredibly expensive - apparently it has to be "registered" RAM. But there's enough of it to make a ramdisk the size of a small SSD and still have plenty left over. And it does appear to be worth going LGA2011-3 to get two 2.4GHz 8-core CPUs for <$650 each.

Edit: Oh, the CPUs don't need much cooling. I just added the liquid cooler to make arranging two coolers easier.

Speaking of SSDs, this build could probably use more drives, but I got tired of fiddling with them. This board also doesn't appear to be SLI compatible, so it appears to be stuck with a single GTX 980, or maybe an R9 295X2 if you consider AMD.

And pick up the new ThermalRight Macho rev. B to keep the CPU cool and quiet, as well as stay clear of your RAM.

Total comes in at ~$3400, which leaves some room in the budget for a nice new display, new peripherals, etc.

Extreme Pro is for OS/scratch space. Ultra II for games because why not. 6 TB for media assets. Feel free to drop the Ultra II for additional hard disk if your friend's steam library or whatever is already well in excess of 1 TB, or drop it altogether to pocket the money.
