i was wondering something, a sort of hypothetical about a project im looking into.
what hardware config would be best for having a central system, either a file server or just an external hard drive enclosure, that handles all the storage, in the 2-3 TB range, and then having several other DB servers that run databases , could be up to 13.
there will be alot of bandwidth used in these databases, and im leaning more towards quad opterons for the db server. of course that means at least 32gb of ram. hard drives on the individual db servers would be scsi, perhaps 150gb, doesnt have to be too much. but i will probably be putting in a hotswap second drive for back ups in case of failure, in a raid 1 set up perhaps, what would be my best course of action there?
i would need to pick out a quality fiber channel card to connect form each db server tot he main file server. now would i need some sort of seperate hub to connect all the db servers to the file storage via fiberchannel?
also, is scsi still the best hard disk to choose for the main storage? perhaps there is an SAS solution out that i havent seen yet that would be better, but i havent seen much out in that form yet.
basically i need to know what any of you would use if oyu had the choice as far as the components, i know what ive been looking at, but i want to hear other opinions, especially on the external hd issue, for instance giving an example list of parts someone might use in thier 'dream' server so to speak lol. assume that the load on the servers will be pretty high, so i have to plan for that. software wise lets say it would be using linux and perhaps mysql pro or oracle possibly. budget wise, there isnt really a price problem, just looking for the best performance/realibility here. thanks.
