High end 19" Monitors - Whats the best for a Graphics Pro?

Hey guys,

Can you help me choose a kick-ass 19" monitor (19 to save some$)?

I want the best 19" monitor out there but the specs are confusing me.

Dot pitch should be .24 or lower and refresh should be at least 85Hz-120Hz from 1024 resolution +.

Whats hot right now? I'm pretty loyal Sony but they do not seem to have a decent 19".
Mitsubishi Diamontron?
Lacie Elctron Blue "looks" pretty but the specs are telling me differently.

advice needed :)

19" monitors with a <.24mm dot pitch are extremely rare. The only one I know of is the Sony G410R, which uses a FD Trinitron tube, has a .24mm stripe pitch, has a max resolution of 1800x1440, and a recommended resolution of 1600x1200@85Hz. 16x12 on a 19" is kind of stretching the limits of human vision, though. 1280x960 is a much more realistic resolution. Sony doesn't list the refresh rate for that resolution, but I imagine it'd be at least 90Hz vertical. (Stay away from 1280x1024 - it's a 5:4 aspect ratio, whereas most displays are engineered for a 4:3 image.)

Hitachi CM753. .22 dot pitch, 1600x1200 @85hz. At 1024x768, 120hz. The monitor is great and I've had it over 2 years now without a single problem. Edge to edge screen, I couldn't ask for anything more. Check out the Hitachi monitors, they are all .22 and are absolutely great when seen.

My next monitor will either be DVI or a 21".

You can't really compare the dot pitch of shadow mask monitors (which Hitachis are) with aperture grille monitors. For example, a .22mm horizontal dot pitch (typical of a decent shadow mask) is roughly the same as a .25mm dot pitch of an aperture grille. It's the diagonal measurement of dot pitch, not horizontal or vertical.

That said, the Hitachi CM721FET has a great dot pitch (.19mm horizontal) but the refresh rates are slightly lacking (1600x1200@75Hz).

I thought AG monitors use horizontal dot pitches, and shadow masks followed suite to make them more easily comparable. I don't see how you would measure diagonal dot pitch with vertical strips.

I would go with Mitsubishi I like the look of them the colors look better than the sony to me, you need to go look at them in person and decide what you like, If you were going to spend $1000 on a new TV set wouldnt you go down and look at them?? like Yucky said 24mm dot pitch are extremely rare so just forget about that.

Yes, you can't compare them apple-to-apple.

Shadow mask dot pitch (horizontal or diagonal) - the distance in mm between adjacent holes in the shadow mask
Aperture grille stripe pitch - the distance in mm between adjacent stripes of the same colour >>

While the diagonal dot pitch has historically been the measurement standard,
it doesn?t work for aperture grill monitors. Aperture grille is constructed using a series of ?stripes? instead of dots. Thus, there is no diagonal measure and aperture grille manufacturers quote the ?stripe pitch? also known as the horizontal dot pitch. Obviously this is a shorter measure and shadow mask manufacturers responded by publishing their horizontal dot pitch to allow consumers to accurately compare between the two technologies. The horizontal measurement is an apples to apples comparison.
