High CPU temps

I just upgraded my computer with 2.4GHz Conroe and Asus P5B motherboard.. but Im having problems with CPU temperatures. For some reason, it's about 50C idle and more under load. Im using stock heatsink, but it shouldn't be that bad, or is it?

I also tried to remove the heatsink and put some thermal paste instead of the original compound (I cleaned it with alcohol before putting new thermal paste), but it didn't help.

So, what do you think is the problem?

How much thermal paste did you use when you put it on yourself? You should of put about a BB sized dot and spread with something like a credit card. Some people don't even spread it, they just attach the HSF to the CPU and let it spread itself. I haven't tried this, but apparently it works. Too much thermal paste could cause higher temps.

I did spread it using a finger and plastic bag. Btw, what size a BB sized dot is?

Also, heatsink doesn't feel hot at all when I touch it.

My old P4 Win 2000 Workstation CPU used to idle at 45C and work as high as 65C.

I thought that was normal by today's standards.

Since all my rigs now are AMD, I don't get more than 45C load on my CPUs.

What are you using to measure temps? For me, Asus PC Probe showed 8-10C higher than the Intel tool does.

At that time, I had a temp sensor probe (an old poultry thermometer) available for testing my Intel P4.

Today, I use a Craftsman IR temp sensor probe for more accurate readings.

Im using Asus PC probe to read the temps. Anyway, should the temps really be that high, I mean Core 2 should be power-efficient.

Hmm.. I tried to to measure temperatures with Core Temp and it says that temperature under load is 51C and when 35C when idling.. Which one I should trust more?

Core Temp and the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool both measure temperature directly from the two cores. I would trust those far more than PC Probe.

I suspect that it is asus - i have a similar problem with p5b-e. I use the bios moniotor program and no matter what I do it shows 50C idle. I'm undervolting to 1.25. Bleh.

I guess Asus' thermal sensor just doesn't work properly, then..

51C temperature under load isn't that bad, so it'll do.
