High CPU Load, Spotty Performance

Within the last couple of days my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) has developed some issues. Specifically, it seems to have times when the CPU load reaches and sticks at 100 percent making it next to impossible to do anything and sometimes resulting in a freeze. Surfing the internet and related activities does not seem to pose a problem.

An example in both Ubuntu and XP Pro. If I begin an xvid movie, it will work ok for approximately 1-5 minutes, then slow down to perhaps 1 frame per second and eventually freeze the program.

Logically to me, this implies a heat problem, which has been a problem with this computer recently. During the summer, it would shut down due to excessive heat. After raising four corners of the computer allowing air to flow feely underneath, the auto shutdown went away.

About a month later, this video problem developed. It has not shutdown automatically since, but lack of video playback capabilities is a big loss. Speedfan reports the CPU temp to be 56C, GPU 63C, HD 50C, and Temp1 at 85C. Also, I noticed one of the two fans no longer operates. Unfortunately, I'm in Africa, so coming across another mini fan would be rather tough.

Any Insight?

That fan probably cools your northbridge or something, and thats what Temp1 is supposed to be. Video goes through the northbridge.

Where in Africa? Out in the middle of the bush or something? Surely there must be computer stores in the nearest city...

I did open up the computer, and cleaned everything out. I tried to get the bad fan to work by lubing it, but it seems the bearings are beyond repair. I'm in senegal which does have computer stores, but proprietary dell laptop fans, I doubt it.
