So for about a month, I've been exercising regularly (biking and kayaking mostly... a little weight training) and a diet which pretty much prohibits me from eating anything I like : (

I've lost about 10 lbs from 206.

Problem is.. I checked my blood pressure at those supermarket machines and it's up.

Guess I have too much blood for my body mass now. Any tips on fixing it?

Diet and exercise can make a big difference, so you are on the right track. You should get a cuff for testing @ home though, try different times of day, a few times a day if you can. Try to get the arm kind, they are cheaper and (from what I understand) more accurate then the wrist or finger type.

The hypertension can whittle away at your lifespan, so if you are consistently on the high side you should get checked out by doc and get on meds if necessary, good luck.

thats probaly not really the problem. Have you been eating alot of high cholestrol foods? What is your pulse? Where you nervus when you took it? All kinds of things can affect it. To know if you have a high bp, get a cuff and check it over a period of time. Or go into the supermarket on a daily basis and watch what it is. If it is normaly high (over 120/80) then go see a doctor.

For an adult high blood pressure is generally anything above 140/90 while optimal should be a little below 120/80.

Just a word to the wise. I am in pretty good shape and had a foot injury in Jan 02. Nurse said my BP was high but attributed it to the injury. I went to see my Doctor 2 weeks ago due the flu. Really high this time, 158/100. Am on medication a pill a day and it is down to 130/80. It creeps up on you and really has no symtoms but it is a killer.

Check it again next week and if it is still high go see your Doctor.

Reduce your sodium intake and increase your intake of fiber. Base the majority of your carbohydrates around fiberous carbs and reduce your intake of starchy carbs. Reduce your intake of red meat and choose lean meats where possible. Stay away from fructose! exercise exercise! drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. This alone will reduce your overall blood pressure drastically and cause positive changes for your body overall.

Rakkis,

How many tests did you run at the supermarket? One or two is not enough, you need to run a series. Do twelve, throw out the first two, and average the other ten. If you want real accuracy, do this three days - total of thirty tests.

Sepen,

Did they just automatically stick you on drugs? Mine is ALWAYS high at the Doctor's office because I suffer from "white coat hypertension". I get out of that environment, and it drops like a rock. I hate Doctors whose FIRST solution is a pill.

<< Could be that gallon of coffee you drink every morning...? >>

Caffeine has ZERO effect on long-term hypertension. It only raises the blood pressure temporarily after drinking the first cup or two. Then it settles back to your normal range.
